Peter Carey was born on 1943, having been born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia. He attended Monash University to study science and supported himself in the early stages of his writing career by penning advertisement copies. Several of his books explore themes of Australian nationality and history. He first found success with his surreal short stories, two collections of which, War Crimes and The Fat Man in History, were published. These tales, together with three more never before collected, make up his Collected Tales.

Carey belonged to a group of Australian authors who, beginning with William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, abandoned realism for international models. His stories are now compared to those of postcolonial authors like Salman Rushdie, Timothy Mo, and Michael Ondaatje because of the way they blend fable, satire, and fantasy. The political narrative at the center of The Peculiar Life of Tristran Smith, which takes place in ‘Efica’ and ‘Voorstand,’ and the weird stories it tells about Australia’s development and status in the modern world are what set it apart.
The book’s malformed yet theatrical narrator, Tristan, is one of many “strange bodies” in Carey’s literature. For instance, in the play “Peeling,” the protagonist, a woman, is forced to take off all of her clothes until she is “a little doll, hairless, eyeless, and white from head to toe”. Another notable story is “He Found Her in Late Summer,” in which the hero learns that the beautiful woman he has saved is actually a vampire. After experiencing what he calls “all the cast of tormentors,” Harry Joy is convinced he is in Hell.
After breaking with suburban morality and hooking up with Honey Barbara, a hotel prostitute, he finds himself in a commune and having philosophical discussions with the forest’s inhabitants. The satirical take on commerce, sex, and politics in Bliss was groundbreaking. Another defining feature is the fluidity with which time is handled; it is not until the very last phrase that we learn that Harry and Honey Barbara’s children are narrating the narrative.
