An Irish businessman named Peter Brendan Bellew has been serving as the chief operating officer (COO) of Ryanair, a low-cost airline, since the year 2017. Over thirty years, he has worked in the tourist and aviation industries. While working for Ryanair, Bellew announced in July 2019 that he would be departing the company at the end of the year to join easyJet, a competitor airline.
Before enrolling at C.B.C. Monkstown in Dublin, he had his education at CBS St. Mary’s Drogheda since he was originally from Bettystown, which is located in Ireland. From Trinity College Dublin, Bellew received a Bachelor of Business Studies degree as well as a Master of Arts degree in Economics in the year 1987. He contributed articles to The Piranha, the college’s satirical journal when he was a student at Trinity.
CIE Tours, an Irish bus travel company, hired him as a manager in charge of its London operations in 1987. He assumed this position in 1987. In the years that followed, he established Drive Ireland in 1989, and Irish Cottage Club in 1998, and in 2001, he expanded his business operations to include online travel management via Vbnets / Wapprofit. When Bellew initially entered the aviation sector in 1993, he was working as a manager at Kerry Airport in Killarney, Ireland. This was his first experience in the profession.
It was attributed to him that he was able to significantly raise the number of passengers from 6,000 to more than 400,000 during his time as director and general manager of the passenger transportation system. There, Bellew served in a variety of posts during his career at the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, including head of sales and marketing, director of flight operations, and director of training and recruiting. He began his tenure with Ryanair in 2006 as deputy director of flight operations.
Amid enormous financial losses, which were compounded by the twin major aviation disasters of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014, Bellew joined Malaysia Airlines, the flag carrier of Malaysia, as chief operations officer on September 1, 2015. This was part of the ongoing restructuring program that the airline is undergoing.
During his employment, he was responsible for overseeing some aspects of the restructuring program that was managed by Christoph Mueller, who had previously served as the chief executive officer of Aer Lingus. This program resulted in the airline laying off 6,000 employees. After Mueller resigned from his position as chief executive officer of the firm less than a year into his contract, Bellew formally took up the position on July 1, 2016. Mueller cited his resignation as being due to changes in his circumstances.
While it is true that Bellew’s appointment maintained continuity to Mueller’s unfinished work, it also stirred up more controversy inside Malaysia. This is because several parties were uneasy with the selection of another foreigner to lead the national flag carrier, which was a foreigner. After Mueller, he was just the second foreign CEO in the history of the airline, and he was the third CEO of the airline in the last two years.
The announcement that Bellew will be returning to Ryanair as chief operating officer was made on October 17, 2017. He would be replacing Michael Hickey, who had resigned from his position as a result of a rostering mistake. As a sort of “national service” for “Ireland’s greatest company,” Bellew’s decision to return to his previous post consisted mostly of settling the pilot’s issue. Bellew defined his choice as a form of “national service” for the firm.
The idea that his return to Ryanair would make him the next in line to replace Michael O’Leary when he retires was a rumor that circulated in Ireland and throughout the world. In July 2019, Bellew announced that he would be leaving the airline at the end of the year. This happened after he had assisted the low-cost carrier in navigating through important salary negotiations with labor unions.
Rumors were circulating in July 2019 that Bellew would be leaving Ryanair to join EasyJet before the end of the year 2019. Ryanair offered a response to this news on August 6, 2019, by initiating a legal action against Bellew, which eventually proved to be unsuccessful. Ryanair had maintained that Mr. Bellew had knowledge that had competitive value when he left Ryanair and that he was bound by a covenant that prohibited him from working for another European airline for one year.
In this particular instance, Bellew openly confesses that he signed the covenant and that at the time of signing, he had a complete understanding of both the meaning and the purpose of the covenant.EasyJet issued an apology to its employees on March 21, 2020, in response to the publication of a film by Bellew titled “Staff Motivation” during the COVID-19 epidemic. The Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, had used a speech that Bellew had plagiarized.
An easyJet pilot was cited as saying, “I think this plagiarized speech cements his reputation as being completely untrustworthy.” This statement was made about the fact that pilots at easyJet were already disgusted with Peter’s behavior this week. In addition to expressing his regret to the staff and the Taoiseach, Bellew said that in the future, he will compose all of his respective remarks.
