Pentatonix often abbreviated as PTX is a five-member American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of Scott Hoying, Kirsty Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Avi Kaplan used to be a member of the group. Their worPentatonix began as “The Trio,” Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, and Mitch Grassi. The three met at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, where they were members of choirs and drama groups.

They originally composed a trio version of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s Telephone for a radio competition to meet the cast of Glee. They didn’t win, but it sparked interest at their school and even on YouTube, where they continued arranging songs on Scott Hoying’s channel. Hoying decided to audition for the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, a televised a capella singing competition, in 2011. During this time, Maldonado and Hoying had graduated and were attending different universities, while Grassi was still a senior at Martin High School.

A member of Hoying’s college a capella group, the SoCal Vocals, suggested they find a beatboxer and vocal bassist to complement their already formed trio of singers.oying met Avi Kaplan through a mutual friend, who already had a reputation for being “an amazing bass in the central California area,” and the trio discovered Kevin Olusola on YouTube around the same time that one of Olusola’s videos of himself beatboxing while playing the cello went viral.

They were accepted onto the show and went on to win it in November 2011. The band claims to be influenced by a wide range of musical genres, including pop, dubstep, electro, and hip-hop. However, they all enjoy very different styles of music, which they say helps when it comes to arrangements. Following the Sing-Off Since its inception in September 2011, their main YouTube channel, PTXofficial, has amassed nearly 15 million subscribers and over 3,194,990,800 views.

The group’s post k frequently consists of covers of existing songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, and some original material, mostly in the pop music style, but not always. Their music is distinguished by their unique arrangement style, a strong presence of low bass vocals, and a wide range of vocal percussion.

They won the third season of “The Sing-Off” in 2011. This resulted in a $200,000 prize and a recording contract. Pentatonix has sold out shows all over the world since then. Their YouTube channel (PTXofficial) has 18.8 million subscribers and approximately 4.5 billion views, and they have also been featured in YouTube Rewind 2014. They performed a “Daft Punk” medley and a cover of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” both of which were nominated for and won Grammys for Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Cappella.

As of December 2018, the video for “Daft Punk” had nearly 300,000,000 views on YouTube. Since its inception in September 2011, their main YouTube channel, PTXofficial, has amassed nearly 15 million subscribers and over 3,194,990,800 views.
