Pedro was born to Alfonso Vermdez, who was descended from Bermudo Ovéquiz of the Vela family and Jimena Peláez, and Urraca Raimndez, who was possibly the daughter of Raymond the Fratricide, who was forced to flee Navarre after taking part in the murder of his brother, King Sancho IV of Navarre, in 1076. Maria Fróilaz, Pedro’s first wife, was the daughter of Froila Dáz and the widow of Melendo Náez. Her father, Sancho Garcés, was the illegitimate half-brother of King Sancho IV of Navarre, and her mother, Estefana Sánchez, was his daughter.
By 30 November 1143, they were married, and they remained wedded as late as 4 October 1164. Elvira Pérez, their only child, became Pedro’s principal inheritance. Elvira gave the properties that her father had owned in Santa Marina and Villaverde to the Order of Calatrava in December 1174. The “houses, baths, ovens, farms, vineyards, orchards, and gardens” in Toledo and the estates in Azaa that she had received from her “illustrious” father were given to the Order of Santiago on June 26, 1175.
On September 7, 1170, Pedro and his new wife Sancha Fernández, the daughter of count Fernando Pérez de Traba and Theresa, Countess of Portugal, who had been Pedro’s widow since 1167, presented a bequest to the convent of Santa Mara de Lapedo. She donated to the churches of Sobrado, Caabeiro, and Meira between the years 1157 and 1171 and was known for her philanthropy. After marrying Gonzalo Ruiz in April 1178 and granting the arras she had acquired from Pedro to the Knights Hospitaller, she was already a widow. In addition, it appears that Sancha’s sons lvaro, Rodrigo, and Vermudo inherited portions of Pedro’s riverfront properties.
On March 9th, 1181, she was still among us. Chronica Adefonsi imperatoris states that in March 1126, Pedro was among the first group of nobility to pay homage to Alfonso VII at Zamora. From 8 July 1129 to 10 June 1130, he held the position of alférez, or standard-bearer in charge of the knights of the royal household, an honorable position usually reserved for young men of noble birth. Pedro and his uncle Suero Vermdez were tasked by Alfonso VII in 1133 to subdue the insurgent Asturian count Gonzalo Peláez. The chronicle Chronica Adefonsi states that they began their campaign with “all the Asturians”.
For an additional two years, Gonzalo’s enemies fought relentlessly. A temporary peace agreement was arranged in 1135 by Suero, Pedro, and Arias Nez, the Bishop of León at the time. Pedro attended Alfonso’s coronation as imperator totius Hispaniae in May 1135, and he may have camped there with the other nobles despite owning property in the city. During another rebellion in the fall of 1136, Pedro arrested Gonzalo Peláez and sent him to the castle of Aguilar de Campoo in the province of León.
On 30 November 1139, Pedro took control of the territory of Asturias de Oviedo, including the city of Salcedo, and he remained in this position until 1170. The Poema de Almera states that he went with Alfonso on the 1147 conquest of Almera. At his return to Toledo in 1148, he was awarded the highest title in the realm at the time: count.
At the start of the Almera war, Pedro controlled the territory between the Luna and Omaas rivers, including the tendencies of Ablaa and Tineo in Asturias and Babia in León. On June 27, 1163, he still had Babia, and on July 18, 1167, he still had Tineo. Pedro was mentioned in passing as the holder of the Asturian tendencies of Luna, Orna, and Teberga during the years 1157 and 1162. Pedro was awarded the tenencia of Gozón in Asturias in December 1168.
Pedro was on a mission to learn more about the Asturian monasteries between 1148 and 1154. During this time, he bought seven monasteries’ worth of real land. The waters of Villanueva were the source of contention between Pedro and fellow count Ramiro Fróilaz on June 1, 1153. Pedro’s brother Rodrigo bought some land from Villa Marn in May 1162. One Greo Pérez, in February 1154, submitted himself and his land to Pedro Alfonso in exchange for security and the provision of clothing and food. Between 30 November 1143 and 23 November 1161, Pedro and his first wife completed eight independent property acquisitions in Asturias and León.
Pedro and one Miguel Azarafi made a deal in October 1155. In 1155, Pedro granted the bathhouse he had received from the king in the Toledo neighborhood of Santa Leocadia to Miguel Azarafi, on the condition that Azarafi pays for all necessary repairs himself, with the exception of the boiler, which Pedro would be responsible for replacing. They agreed to split the bathhouse’s revenues evenly. This is the lone case of a nobleman in León-Castile making commercial bets in the 12th century.
Pedro’s ancestors founded the Lapedo Monastery. Two agreements with his brother Gonzalo and his cousin Vela Gutiérrez on July 23 and 29 of 1141 gave him full ownership of it, as recorded in the Historia compostellana. There is a large list of things Pedro and his first wife gave to Lapedo. He sent sixteen cows to the San Salvador de Oviedo cathedral in 1149. Pedro was also a major donor to the Asturian Benedictine monasteries.
