Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, his father was an engineer and his mother was housewife. His father was an engineer, while his mother was a housewife. Coelho was educated in a Jesuit institution from an early age, and he always had the ambition to become a writer. According to Coelho, his parents’ response to his creative goals and to the reclusive nature of his personality was to check him into a mental hospital and give their consent for electroconvulsive treatment for their son.
While he was a young man, Coelho enrolled in law school but left out to travel. His travels took him to South America, North Africa, and Europe. He worked as a journalist and also got engaged with a theatrical company, where he acted and directed productions. He also founded a magazine that was named 2001. In addition to that, he contributed to the creation of a political comic strip and composed lyrics for rock songs.
Due of his progressive efforts, Coelho was abducted and tortured by a Brazilian paramilitary organization in 1974. Following that, he abandoned his unconventional lifestyle and pursued a career as an executive in the music business. While Paulo Coelho was at an Amsterdam café, he happened to meet a stranger who advised him to travel on the traditional Roman Catholic pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which is located in Northern Spain.
This encounter marked the significant turning point in Coelho’s life. Coelho did so in 1986. As a consequence of this, he had an insight that those who have read The Alchemist will be familiar with: he made the decision to pursue his goal. Coelho’s goal was to establish himself as a writer. The voyage that Paulo Coelho took to Santiago de Compostela served as the impetus for the author’s book The Pilgrimage: Diary of Magus, which is about remarkable things happening to regular people.
After its first publication in 1987, the book had very little of an effect on either the business or cultural landscape. In the year after that, The Alchemist was finally released to the public. The novel sold only nine hundred copies initially and was not reprinted. But, with the success of his subsequent book, Brida, which garnered positive reviews, Paulo Coelho went on to write the best-selling novels The Pilgrimage and The Alchemist.
In point of fact, The Alchemist became the book that sold the most copies in the history of Brazil, went on to become a best-seller in other countries, and eventually became one of the novels that sold the most copies overall. There are almost twenty-five books in all that have been written and published by Coelho. These publications include collection of essays and newspaper columns, but the vast majority are novels.
His works Beside the River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept, The Fifth Mountain, Veronika Decides to Die, The Devil & Miss Prym, Warrior of the Light: A Handbook, The Zahir, and Eleven Minutes are some of the most well-known examples of his work. The author, who is now famous all over the world, and his wife now split their time between Europe and Rio de Janeiro.
His private files were posted to the internet in order to establish an online Paulo Coelho Foundation. Paulo Coelho was conceived in Brazil, where he also received his education at a Jesuit institution. As a teenager, Coelho wanted to become a writer. When he told his mother about it, she gave the following response: “Your darling, your dad has a degree in engineering. He is an intelligent and rational guy who has a very distinct perspective on how the world works.
Do you have any idea what it takes to make a living as a writer?” Coelho’s parents sent him to a mental hospital when he was 17 years old due to his introversion and his resistance to pursuing a conventional route. He managed to break out of the facility three times until he was finally let out at the age of 20. His parents were devout Catholics, and they raised him with a strong emphasis on his faith and religion.
Coelho later remarked that “It wasn’t that they wanted to hurt me, but they didn’t know what to do… They did not want to kill me in any way by doing that; rather, they intended to preserve me.” Coelho went in law school and gave up his ambition to become a writer in order to fulfill his parents’ intention for him to become a lawyer.
After another year, he decided to drop out of school and live the life of a hippy instead. Throughout the 1960s, he traveled around South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe and began taking drugs. In 1980, author Paulo Coelho wed the artist Christina Oiticica. Once, the couple split their time between a rural property in the French Pyrenees and Rio de Janeiro.
But they now call Geneva, Switzerland, their permanent home. Formerly, they had split their time between those two cities for half the year. In 1996, he established the Paulo Coelho Institute, an organization that helps disadvantaged youth as well as senior citizens.
