Paul Dooley was born on February 22, 1928, in the city of Parkersburg, in the state of West Virginia. In a later explanation, he stated that he was dissatisfied with the fact that the place where he grew up lacked a more cultural atmosphere. Paul gorged himself on the comedy shows that were broadcast on the radio every day. His first job after finishing school was working as a cartoonist for the local newspaper, where he also had a comic strip that he wrote and drew himself. After completing his service in the Navy and receiving his discharge in 1952, Dooley enrolled at West Virginia University with the intention of earning a degree in acting.
Dooley uprooted his life and moved to the Big Apple in the pursuit of making it big in the New York theater scene. Dooley began his career on the New York stage in supporting roles; nonetheless, he quickly found constant employment there. Because of the stand-up performances he had performed previously, he was invited to appear on The Tonight Show in 1962. Dooley was seen by famed director Mike Nichols, who at the time was searching for players for his Broadway production of “The Odd Couple.”
Dooley was one of the men that Nichols cast in the show. After initially being hired as a poker partner, Dooley was later cast in the role of Felix Ungar, succeeding Art Carney in the role. After the first screening of “The Odd Couple” on March 10, 1965, Dooley received a lot of attention as a result of his performance in this role. A few years later, he joined the Compass Players, a cabaret company that also included future director Mike Nichols, and signed with the William Morris Agency.
Dooley has been a mainstay in all of Robert Altman’s films, and the diversity of unforgettable characters he has portrayed has propelled him to fame and made him a household name. In 1978, he had a starring role in Robert Altman’s comedy-drama The Wedding, which was nominated for a BAFTA. His co-stars were Mia Farrow and Geraldine Chaplin. After collaborating on projects such as “A Perfect Couple,” “Health,” “Popeye,” “The O.C.,” and “Stiggs,” among others, Dooley and Altman went on to become a successful directing-acting team. The authors of the book titled “Health” are Dooley and Altman.
Both of Dooley’s parents were of Irish descent. When Dooley was a younger man, his cartoon strip was published in the newspaper that served Parkersburg. After serving in the Navy for a while, he decided to pursue acting in college. The only child he has with his wife, the author Winnie Holzman (born in 1985), is a daughter named Savannah Dooley. He uprooted his life and moved to New York City, where he established himself almost immediately as a theater regular.
Dooley has also tried his hand at magic and clowning, and he worked as a stand-up comedian for five years before becoming a member of the ensembles of The Compass Players and The Second City in New York City. He tried his hand at a variety of other sorts of entertainment, one of which was writing. During one point in his career, he contributed writing to The Electric Company and made cameo appearances in various advertisements. Popeye, Sixteen Candles, and Breaking Away are just a few of the movies in which Dooley has made an appearance.
He has performed in guest appearances on a number of notable television programs, including Desperate Housewives, The Golden Girls, and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, among others. In the year 2000, he was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the show The Practice, in which he had a recurring role as an eccentric judge. Additionally, he was featured in the infamous scene from Little Shop of Horrors that was cut from the film, but Jim Belushi was ultimately cast in the role. Huge was an original sitcom produced by ABC Family in 2010, and it starred Dooley in the role of the show’s fictional chief chef at Camp Victory, which was a weight loss camp.
Dooley had early promise as a cartoonist while he was growing up in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He even contributed a comic to the community newspaper while he was there. After serving in the Navy for a while, he decided to pursue acting in college. He uprooted his life and moved to New York City, where he established himself almost immediately as a theater regular. Dooley has a wide range of interests, some of which include comedy, magic, and clowning; in fact, he worked as a stand-up comedian for a period of five years. He was a writer who was not afraid to stretch out into several other forms of entertainment, and he did it with gusto. Dooley has been in a significant number of episodes of television shows and films, some of which include My So-Called Life, Dream On, Grace Under Fire, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Was located in New York by Mike Nichols, who cast him in the role of one of the poker-playing pals in the first Broadway production of “The Odd Couple” in 1965. Nichols found him in New York. Dooley took up the role of Walter Matthau’s hedonistic roommate Oscar Madison’s fastidious roommate Felix Unger after Art Carney left the cast. Carney had played the role previously.
I went to high school with actor James Dukas, who was also one of my classmates. Later on, while they were students at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, they “palled around” with Don Knotts. In 1952, Dooley earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in speech and drama. It was originally intended for him to play the part of Patrick Martin, but the ending of the film from 1986 was rewritten without him in it. Dooley is given credit for his work in the film’s DVD and special thanks sections, despite the fact that Jim Belushi was ultimately cast in the role.
