Patti LaBelle Bio

Patti LaBelle is an American R&B singer and actor. She was born Patricia Louise Holt on May 24, 1944, but is better known by her stage name, Patti LaBelle. She has been called the “Godmother of Soul” throughout her career. Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles was where she made her professional debut in the early 1960s, serving as both the group’s lead singer and frontwoman at the time. After changing their name to Labelle in the 1970s, the band achieved widespread success with the song “Lady Marmalade,” which peaked at number one on the charts.

As a consequence of this, after the group disbanded in 1976, LaBelle had a successful solo career, beginning with the release of her critically praised debut album, which featured the song “You Are My Friend,” which came to define her career. As a result of the success of the singles, “If Only You Knew,” “Love, Need and Want You,” “New Attitude,” and “Stir It Up” in 1984, LaBelle became a mainstream solo sensation. “Dilemma,” which was released in 2002, sampled the song “Love, Need and Want You.” A little over a year and a half later, in 1986, LaBelle released the number-one album Winner in You, as well as the number-one duet hit “On My Own” with Michael McDonald.

Be Yourself was the album that gave birth to the classic song “If You Asked Me To” in 1989. Celine Dion later recorded her version of the song. LaBelle was awarded the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992 for her album Burnin’, which was released in 1991 and includes the singles “Somebody Loves You Baby (You Know Who It Is)”, “Feels Like Another One”, and “When You’ve Been Blessed (Feels Like Heaven)”.

A second Grammy award was bestowed upon LaBelle for the live CD titled Live! One Night Only. Her appeal to young R&B fans remained strong throughout the 1990s thanks to the albums Burnin’, Gems (1994), and Flame (1997), which she released in that decade. She got together with the other members of Labelle to record the album Back to Now, and then they went on a tour that received positive reviews. In addition to her fame as a singer, LaBelle has also found success as an actress.

She played a role in the film A Soldier’s Story, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and she has been in television shows such as A Different World and American Horror Story: Freak Show. LaBelle starred in her own television sitcom titled “Out All Night” in the year 1992. After ten years, Patti LaBelle hosted her very own lifestyle television show on TV One called Living It Up with Patti LaBelle. At the age of 70, LaBelle competed in the dancing competition Dancing with the Stars in the year 2015.

Labelle has also enjoyed success with the creation of her own brand of bedding, cookbooks, and meals for a number of other firms. A YouTube video that praised the product went viral in 2015, which led to millions of dollars in sales of Patti’s Sweet Potato Pie. Because of this, Walmart was able to sell one pie every second throughout the course of a period of seventy-two hours. She has amassed more than fifty million record sales across the globe during the course of her career, which has spanned seven decades. In addition to being inducted into the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame, LaBelle is also a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked LaBelle as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time and featured her on their list. LaBelle is a dramatic soprano who is known for the strength of her voice, the range of her repertoire, and the emotional delivery of her performances. Patricia Louise Holte was the name given to LaBelle when she was born. She was born in the Eastwick neighborhood of Southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She was the second youngest child of Henry (1919–1989) and Bertha (Robinson; 1916–1978) Holte’s three children, and the next-to-youngest kid of a total of five children born to the couple. She was born in the year 1978. Thomas Hogan Jr. (1930-2013), Vivian Hogan (1932-1975), Barbara (1942-1982), and Jacqueline “Jackie” (1945-1989) were her siblings. Her mother worked as a housekeeper while her father had a career as a club performer and railroad worker. LaBelle would later reveal in her autobiography, titled “Don’t Block the Blessings,” that her parent’s marriage was an abusive one, despite the fact that she had a happy childhood.

LaBelle was sexually assaulted by a family acquaintance when she was just twelve years old, shortly after the breakup of her parent’s marriage. LaBelle received first place in a talent competition held at her high school, John Bartram High School, when she was sixteen years old. As a result of this success, she formed her first singing group, the Ordettes, in 1960 with Jean Brown, Yvonne Hogen, and Johnnie Dawson, who were also classmates of hers at the time.

The band grew popular in the area thanks to LaBelle’s performance as the lead singer; however, two of the band’s members eventually left to start families, and the daughter of another member was pressured to leave the band by her deeply devout father. Cindy Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx joined the Ordettes in 1962. Both Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx had previously been a part of another vocal group that is no longer active.

Cindy Birdsong joined the Ordettes in 1962. During the same year, they presented themselves for consideration by the owner of a local record label, Harold Robinson. After hearing LaBelle perform the song “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman,” Robinson decided it would be a good idea to collaborate with the band. At first, Robinson was uninterested in LaBelle because she seemed “too dark and too plain” to him.

Shortly after Robinson signed them, he had them recorded as the Blue Belles, and they were chosen to promote the recording of “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman,” which had been recorded by The Starlets. Robinson had signed them to his record label, Robinson’s Bluebird Records. Because of a problem with the record company, it was recorded as a single by Blue Belles. The manager of The Starlets filed a lawsuit against Harold Robinson after it was discovered that the Blue Belles had been lip-syncing during their performance of the song on American Bandstand.

Robinson changed the name of the group to “Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles” after a legal dispute was resolved outside of court. Robinson bestowed upon Holte the name “LaBelle,” which has its origins in French and means “the beautiful.” Initially, the band was identified in a Billboard advertisement as “Patti Bell and the Blue Bells.” The trio had their first success record with the ballad “Down the Aisle” in 1963.

After it was released by King Records, the song became a crossover top 40 hit on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts. eventually, in the year, they recorded their version of the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The single was eventually re-released on Cameo-Parkway Records, where the trio achieved a second hit on the pop charts with the song in 1964. In the same year, the single “Danny Boy” was released, and it also charted.

After Cameo-Parkway went out of business in 1965, the band relocated to New York and obtained a recording contract with Atlantic Records. They went on to record a total of twelve singles for the label, two of which reached the Billboard Hot 100: “All or Nothing” and “Take Me for a Little While.” During their time with Atlantic Records, the band recorded their version of “Over the Rainbow” as well as a cover of the song “Groovy Kind of Love.” After Birdsong left the group in 1967 to become a member of The Supremes, Atlantic Records, and the group’s longtime manager Bernard Montague parted ways in 1970. Birdsong had left the group in 1967 to become a member of The Supremes.
