Patsy Palmer Bio

Patsy Palmer is the stage name of English actress, DJ, and businesswoman Julie Anne Merkel, who was born on May 26, 1972. She is best known for her roles as Natasha in the children’s drama series Grange Hill and Bianca Jackson in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, the latter of which earned her the British Soap Award for Best Actress. When Palmer attended the Anna Scher Theatre school and discovered that there was already a successful actress using the name Julie Harris, she decided to change her name to the one she uses now.

She kept her mother’s maiden name but changed her given name to Patsy, which was her mother’s nickname. In 1984, Palmer made her first appearance on TV in an episode of the television show The Gentle Touch. Between the years 1985 and 1987, Palmer made an appearance on the children’s drama program Grange Hill, much like a number of other EastEnders performers. She then went on to have brief appearances in the BBC shows Tricky Business, Making News, Clarissa, Love Hurts, Drop the Dead Donkey, and The Bill. She also starred in a Clearasil commercial playing the character of an acne-prone adolescent.

In the year 1993, she was selected to play the part of the feisty Bianca Jackson in the soap opera EastEnders, which is produced by the BBC. More than 22 million people tuned in to see Bianca’s on-screen wedding to Ricky Butcher in 1997, making it one of the most-watched episodes in the history of soap operas. She held the position for a total of six years until deciding to step down in 1999 in order to devote more of her time to her family and to pursue other endeavors. In May of 2002, she appeared in an episode of EastEnders titled “Ricky and Bianca,” in which she played the part again. Bianca and Ricky were able to see one other again for the first time in more than two years while filming the two-part, hour-long special that took place in Manchester. On the broadcast of Top of the Pops that aired on Christmas Day 1993, Palmer made a special appearance and introduced the song “No Limit” by 2 Unlimited with the show’s host, Mark Franklin.

In 1999, Palmer and Fiona Phillips collaborated on the production of the first season of OK TV. She was featured in the first episode of the series getting her hair shampooed in a beauty parlor, where she also conducted an interview with Lindsay Coulson, who portrayed her fictitious mother Carol Jackson on the British soap opera EastEnders. Palmer had a surprise appearance as herself in an episode of the comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme that was created and starred by Kathy Burke in 1999. The skit poked fun at her performance as Bianca Jackson. During the years 2000 and 2001, she played the role of Clare in the detective series McCready and Daughter, which aired for a pilot episode as well as one full season. In 2004, she was seen in the BBC production of He Knew He Was Right, and in 2001, she was a part of the television mini-series Do or Die, which was shown on Sky One. Both of these projects were seen on television.

On stage, she has portrayed the title role in the one-woman musical Tell Me On A Sunday, which has performed all around the United Kingdom and in the West End of London. She also had a prominent part in a UK tour of the musical Steppin’ Out, had an appearance in the first West End run of Mum’s the Word, and performed in We Happy Few by Imogen Stubbs, which had a limited run at the Gielgud Theatre. All of these performances took place in the United Kingdom.

In 1999, when Lorraine Kelly was on maternity leave, Palmer presented the Lorraine Live segment on GMTV as a fill-in for one week. Palmer reported from Miami on topics related to fashion, leisure, and health and fitness. In addition to that, she was a guest presenter on the morning show “Big Breakfast” on Channel 4 for a week. Patsy Palmer’s Ibiza Workout, Patsy Palmer’s Urban Workout, and Patsy Palmer’s Club Workout are just a few of the popular fitness films and DVDs that Palmer has produced and distributed in recent years. Palmer had a cameo appearance on the charitable exercise DVD titled “The Allstar Workout” in the year 2006. Love Story, directed by Nick Love, and Another Green World, directed by Peter Chipping are two of the short films that Palmer has worked on in the film industry.

In 2005, Palmer helped earn money for the Children in Need charity by competing on the Strictly Come Dancing program that was broadcast on the BBC. She has also appeared in a cameo role on The Catherine Tate Program, which is a sketch comedy program hosted by Catherine Tate. On the British television show “The Verdict,” which aired on the BBC in February 2007, she participated as a member of the jury, deliberating a modern and contentious case based on facts and analogies taken from real life. Other celebrities also served on the panel.

On April 5, 2007, Palmer’s autobiography titled All of Me was published in the United Kingdom. She detailed her rise to prominence, her fight with addiction, and the way she fought to overcome her difficulties in the book. She also discussed how she overcame her problems. In 2003, in addition to working as an actress, Teresa Palmer and her close friend Charlotte Cutler founded the firm “Palmer Cutler” with the assistance of marketer Ken Wells and a chemical company headquartered in Kent. Palmer Cutler is a brand that sells cosmetics and self-tanning goods.

In 2005, Palmer expressed her dissatisfaction with EastEnders in a public statement, declaring that she “wouldn’t go back to EastEnders” because the stories were “ridiculous and unbelievable.” However, the BBC made the announcement that Palmer will be returning to the serial as a full-time character in October of 2007, and she made her on-screen return in April of 2008. Palmer has said, “I can’t wait to explore what Bianca has been doing with her life and see what she is going to get up to next.” Additionally, the executive producer of EastEnders, Diederick Santer, has stated, “I’m happy to welcome Patsy Palmer returning to EastEnders. Bianca is without a doubt one of the most well-liked characters that the program has ever shown.

Palmer made the announcement that she will be departing the series in 2014. In the fall of 2019, she had another brief run in the part that she had previously played. It was reported in February of 2020 that Palmer would be returning to her role as Bianca, with scenes scheduled to run later on in the year. This news came as a surprise to everyone. However, in light of the limits imposed by the coronavirus epidemic, this was ultimately scrapped.
