Patrick Ness Bio

Patrick Ness born was on October 17, 1971. The Chaos Walking trilogy and A Monster Calls are among his most well-known works for young adults.

Ness has won the Carnegie Medal, given annually to the author of the best new novel for children or young adults published in the United Kingdom, twice already, in 2011 for Monsters of Men and again in 2012 for A Monster Calls. He is only the second author ever to win the Medal twice in a row, and one of only seven to win the Medal twice at all.

The 2016 film version of A Monster Calls, directed by J.A. Bayona and starring Lewis MacDougall and Sigourney Weaver, was adapted from his screenplay. Class, a spin-off of Doctor Who was also created and written by him. After finishing college, Ness took a job as a corporate writer for a television network. Before relocating to London in 1999, he had a short story published in Genre magazine and was far into writing his first novel.

In 2005, Ness became a naturalized British citizen. Less than two months after the Civil Partnership Act was enacted in 2006, he and his partner formed a civil partnership. After same-sex marriage was legalized in California in August 2013, Ness and his partner tied the knot.

Ness has contributed to a wide variety of publications, including The Daily Telegraph, The Times Literary Supplement, The Sunday Telegraph, and The Guardian, and has taught creative writing at Oxford University. As of July 2012, he’s been writing reviews for The Guardian. He was Booktrust’s inaugural Writer in Residence and a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund.

The first was The Knife of Never Letting Go, which was honored by British children’s authors with the annual Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize. The Knife has two sequels, The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men, and the three books are collectively known as the “Chaos Walking trilogy”; the first book in the series, The Knife, has been republished with the banner “Chaos Walking: Book One” on the front cover. The New World, The Wide, Wide Sea, and Snowscape are three short stories by Ness that take place in the Chaos Walking universe and serve as prequels to the novel Monsters of Men.

The novellas are included in the UK print editions published in 2013 and can be downloaded for free from the internet. Siobhan Dowd, another author working with Denise Johnstone-Burt at Walker, is responsible for creating A Monster Calls (2011). Dowd and Johnstone-Burt had discussed the story and signed a contract for Dowd to write it before her death in August of 2007. After that, Walker independently arranged for Ness to write the book and Jim Kay to illustrate it, and the three of them finished the project without ever having met. The Carnegie and the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medals went to Ness and Kay, respectively; this was the first time this had happened.

On May 7th, 2013, it was announced that he had written the Doctor Who 50th-anniversary e-short for the month of May, entitled “Tip of the Tongue,” which featured the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa. More Than This, his next book, was published on September 5, 2013, and it was shortlisted for the 2015 Carnegie Medal. In 2014, Ness was the featured speaker at the Berlin International Literature Festival’s Children and Young Adult Program.

He declared that a new book titled The Rest of Us Just Live Here would be published in 2015. Ness tweeted the book’s release date on January 20, 2015: it will be released on August 25, 2015, in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, and on October 5, 2015, in Canada and the United States.

Class, written by Ness and announced by the BBC on 1 October 2015, is an eight-part online series that premiered on BBC Three at the end of 2016. Ness announced his departure from the show at the end of the first season in 2017. The BBC ultimately decided to end production on Class.

Release, Ness’s most recent novel, was released on May 4, 2017, and has been described as a “private and intense book” that draws on Ness’s own experiences and thoughts more than any of his other works. Booktrust Teenage Prize, Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, and the 2008 Tiptree Award were just a few of the honors that went to The Knife of Never Letting Go. The Carnegie Medal committee considered it for the award. In 2009, the Costa Book Award for Children’s Literature was given to The Ask and the Answer. It was also chosen for the Carnegie list.

The CILIP Carnegie Medal was awarded to Monsters of Men, and the book was also a finalist for the 2011 Arthur C. Clarke Award. He joined a cable company’s corporate writing team after finishing college. Before relocating to London in 1999, he had a short story published in Genre magazine and was far into writing his first novel. Four novels have come out since then from him. His first book for kids, The Knife of Never Letting Go, was a huge success and was honored with several prestigious honors, including the Booktrust Teenage Prize, the Guardian Award, and the 2008 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. It’s one of the finalists for the Carnegie Medal for 2009. His book, The Ask and the Answer was the recipient of the 2009 Costa Book Award in the children’s book category, which he received in January 2010.
