Patricia Smith Bio

Patricia Smith is a well-known name in the American literary community for her work as a poet, spoken-word performer, dramatist, novelist, writing instructor, and former journalist. Smith was born in 1955. She has had poetry published in literary publications and journals such as TriQuarterly, Poetry, The Paris Review, and Tin House, as well as in anthologies such as American Voices and The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry. He also teaches at the College of Staten Island as an assistant professor.

“Close to Death” was written by Smith and released in September 1993. It examines the life expectancy of black males in connection to violence, drug usage, and AIDS. The poetry written by Smith provide a voice to the hundreds of black men living in New York City, Chicago, and Boston who have exhausted all of their available choices and anticipate dying without being offered the opportunity first to live.

“Her acute ear for the intricacies of speech adds to the vitality of poems written in the voice of black men she encounters amid the inner-city squalor of Chicago and Boston,” writes Publishers Weekly.including but not limited to topics such as love, family, religion, feminism, and the function of poetry. The poem “Boy Dies, Girlfriend Gets His Heart” is based on a true story in which a fifteen-year-old boy donated his heart to the girl he loved before passing away.

In another poem, Smith expresses her perspectives on religion and her upbringing in a Baptist family. This work has garnered much acclaim from reviewers, including One reviewer for Library Journal, Diane Scharper, who referred to it as a “stunning mix of sound and sense.” In contrast, another reviewer for Publishers Weekly said, “Smith appears to be that rarest of creatures, a charismatic slam and performance poet whose artistry truly survives on the printed page.”

In September 1991, Patricia Smith released her first book, Life According to Motown. Twenty years later, Smith has decided to reissue the book for its 20th anniversary. Like most of her poems, this book draws from her background in Chicago during the 1960s, describing the lessons learned among the challenges and glitter of Motown. Smith released Big Towns, Big Talks, a kind of sequel to the book that came before it and explored Life beyond childhood in Chicago. Poetry, teaching, and live performance are all areas in which Patricia Smith excels. She is the author of Unshuttered, which will be published by Northwestern University Press in 2023; Incendiary Art, which was published by Northwestern University Press in 2017, and won both the 2018.

Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the 2017 Los Angeles Times Book Award in Poetry; Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah, which was published by Coffee House Press in 2012, and it won the 2013 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets; Blood Dazzler, which Coffee House published.The poems of Smith have been included in a variety of anthologies, such as The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story (Random House, 2021), which Nikole Hannah-Jones edited; 100 Best African American Poems.

She is also the co-author of the historical book titled Africans in America: America’s Journey Through Slavery (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1998) and the children’s book Janna and the Kings (Lee & Low Books, 2003). Both of these books were published in 1998 and 2003, respectively.Smith has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the Poetry Foundation.

She is the most successful poet in the history of the National Poetry Slam, having won the solo competition of the event a total of four times, and she has also been awarded the Pushcart Prize on two separate occasions. Awarded to Smith in 2023, the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry was a prestigious honor for the poet.
