Clovis and Marvella Smith gave birth to Ozzie Smith on December 26, 1954. He was born in the United States, in the city of Mobile. Smith was the youngest of six children, and both of his parents worked. His father worked as a sandblaster before moving to Los Angeles and becoming a delivery truck driver, and his mother worked as a nursing care aide.
Ozzie Smith’s mother was a big part of his success, always urging him to go to college and pursue his aspirations.Throughout his school years, he participated in a variety of sports, but baseball was his favourite.
Ozzie Smith attended Locke High School and was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He proceeded to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after graduation. He quickly joined the baseball club, and when the starting shortstop went down with an injury during the 1974 season, Smith stepped in to fill the void.
He graduated in 1977, but not before setting numerous baseball records.The Detroit Tigers selected him in the amateur entry draught in 1976, but they couldn’t agree on contract terms. The San Diego Padres selected him in the 1977 draught. He accepted to the conditions of his contract and debuted in Major League Baseball in April 1978.
Despite the fact that this was his rookie season, Ozzie Smith was quickly noticed. He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting at the end of his debut season.
In 1979, Ozzie Smith and his agent, Ed Gottlieb, found themselves in a sour relationship with the Padres’ owners. Smith, on the other hand, had a fantastic season on the field in 1980. At the same time as he was having contract issues with the Padres, the Cardinals’ shortstop was experiencing issues with the team.
During trade talks, the two teams came to an agreement that included multiple players, including Smith. Smith was initially displeased with the trade, but after speaking with the Cardinals, he decided to go ahead with it.
Smith made his MLB debut in 1982 with the St. Louis Cardinals. They went on a 12-game winning streak and finished first in the National League East Division. The Cardinals were victorious in the 1982 World Series.
