Owen Schmitt Bio

Owen Schmitt is a former fullback who played in American football. He was born on February 13, 1985. In the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks to join their team. He attended West Virginia University, where he participated in collegiate football. He had previously participated in athletics at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls before joining the Mountaineers. Schmitt was born with a cleft lip and palate and had many operations as a youngster to fix it. One of these procedures, which took place while he was in the fourth grade and included the insertion of a portion of hip bone into his jaw, was necessary to rectify the condition. As a consequence of what happened, he now has a scar that extends from the bottom of his nose to the top of his lip.

In Virginia, Schmitt attended Paul VI Catholic High School and subsequently transferred to Fairfax High School, where he played fullback, defensive end, and linebacker on the football team. Schmitt’s previous teams were the Philadelphia Eagles and the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League. The next year, Schmitt participated in the spring practices held at West Virginia University. Schmitt, who initially joined the Mountaineers’ team as a walk-on, was promoted to the starting lineup in the fall of his sophomore year in 2005, which proved to be a breakthrough year for him. He was a major blocker in addition to being an aggressive rusher for the team.

In the middle of the season, freshman Steve Slaton was given the opportunity to start at halfback. Together with quarterback Pat White at the helm, Slaton and Schmitt formed one of the top running tandems in the NCAA. Schmitt finished with a total of 380 yards and scored two touchdowns on his own, while Slaton had 1,128 yards and seventeen touchdowns as a significant benefactor of Schmitt’s blocking. During his senior season in 2007, Schmitt was widely considered to be one of the top fullbacks in the country. During the spring practices, he also participated in a significant number of plays at the tight end position, where head coach Rich Rodriguez sometimes lined him up. Schmitt had a breakout performance in his first game of the season, which was a 31-14 victory against Maryland. He ran the ball four times for a total of 46 yards, including an early carry of 44 yards.

During the game, ESPN reported that Schmitt had broken eight face masks in his professional career up to that moment. In the next game, which was played against East Carolina, Schmitt carried for 32 yards on four rushes while also recording two catches for 9 yards. During the game that took place in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse, he received MVP honors after scoring two touchdowns on eight runs for a total of 39 yards. During the same game, he also had a catch for 31 yards and a punt for 27 yards that was downed inside the Syracuse 10-yard line on a trick play.

In the next game, which was a win against #22 Cincinnati by a score of 28-23, he ran the ball six times for a total of 19 yards and scored a touchdown on a run of four yards. This touchdown was the first score of the game. Following victories against Louisville and Cincinnati, it was said that he had shattered ten facemasks in all. The amazing run that West Virginia University had been on to reach the national championship game was derailed by a defeat to Pitt in the Backyard Brawl, which was the last game of the season. This resulted in them being eliminated from contention for the National Championship game and placed them in the Fiesta Bowl against the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners instead.

Schmitt’s touchdown run of 57 yards occurred during an intense game, and his burst through the line of scrimmage and along the sideline opened up what had been a close 6-3 scoreline. This led to the triumph of the Arizona Cardinals against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, which the Arizona Cardinals won 48-28. That run was not only a personal career-best, but it was also a WVU school bowl record. Schmitt also had a rush of 50 yards or more in this game, making it the third bowl in a row in which he has accomplished this feat. At the end of the Fiesta Bowl, Schmitt ended with three runs for a total of 64 yards and a score.

Rich Rodriguez, the head coach of the team, was the one who presented both the Ira Errett Rodgers Award and the Fred Schaus Captain’s Award to Schmitt at the conclusion of the regular season. At the end of the 2007 season, Schmitt ended the year as a rush blocker with 106 knockdown blocks and 17 blocks that resulted in touchdowns. At the end of the season, two of his three “pooch” punts were brought to the ground within the opponent’s 20-yard line, giving him an average of 20.3 yards for each punt.

In his career, Schmitt earned a total of 21 starts, four of which came at the tight end position. He finished his career with 353 carries, split between WVU and Wisconsin–River Falls, and was only brought down for a loss of yardage four times. During his time with the Mountaineers, he amassed a total of 1,003 yards on the ground with an average of 6.3 yards per carry. Schmitt amassed a total of 122 points and 2,398 all-purpose yards throughout his time spent as a college student.

In 2006, Slaton, White, and Schmitt were highlighted on the cover of the “Big Man On Campus” piece that was published in the regional edition of Sports Illustrated. The Mountaineers completed the season with a record of 11-2, exceeding everyone’s expectations. During the course of the season, Schmitt ran for 351 yards and scored seven touchdowns. In addition, he received a touchdown pass and scored once. Another amazing year for Slaton, he finished with 1,744 yards thanks to his blocking.

His performance in the come-from-behind victory against Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl was the highlight of Schmitt’s career. In that game, he substituted in for an injured Slaton and carried for 109 yards and two scores. He went from 245 to 260 pounds throughout the course of the season, which helped Schmitt achieve Strength All-American accolades from the National Strength and Conditioning Association at the conclusion of the season. After the season was over, ESPN.com honored him by bestowing the title of “College football’s top workout freak” onto him.
