Omah Lay was born Stanley Omah Didia on May 19, 1997, although he is better known by his stage name, Omah Lay. He is a Nigerian singer and composer. Early in the year 2020, he became widely known after the self-produced single “Bad Influence” that he had released went viral on various social media platforms.
Stanley Omah Didia spent his childhood in the city of Port Harcourt, which is located in Nigeria. He was born on May 19, 1997, and he is originally from the community of Egbeda, which is located within the Emohua Rivers Local Government Area in the state of Rivers. Prior to enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt, he received his secondary education at Comprehensive High School in the state of Rivers. He was born into a musical family, and before he passed away in 1977, his grandfather performed as a musician for the vocalist Celestine Ukwu, for whom he had played instruments. Drums were Lay’s father’s instrument of choice.
In the beginning, Omah Lay was a member of a rap group and went by the stage name “Lil King.” Later on, he transitioned into songwriting and music production, both of which he did largely unnoticed; as a direct result of these new endeavors, he issued “Do Not Disturb” in April of 2019.
In June of 2019, he signed a recording contract with a company called KeyQaad, and then he went on a hiatus for seven months. While he was taking a hiatus, he worked on his debut extended play, which is titled Get Layd. He stated in an interview with OkayAfrica, “I began working on it in August [of 2019]. In order to finish the project successfully, at one point I was forced to delete all of my social media accounts, refrain from engaging in many activities, and concentrate solely on the task at hand.
The song “Bad Influence” was the first track that I ever recorded for Get Layd. I’d finished that a long time ago, long before the songs we were required to include on the project. After taking some time off, he came back with “Bad Influence,” which by the end of the year 2020 had become the most popular Nigerian song to be listened on Apple Music.
The first official single that Lay released was titled “You,” and it was published on February 14, 2020. Get Layd, his debut extended play, was released on May 22, 2020 and featured five tracks. The EP reached its highest position on the Apple Music charts in Nigeria at number one. The top 15 tracks on the Apple Music charts in Nigeria were all covered by songs from the EP, with “You” reaching its highest position at number one.
Lay made a guest appearance in October on the song “Infinity” from Olamide’s album Carpe Diem, which went on to become the most popular song in Nigeria on Apple Music. What Have We Done is the title of Lay’s second extended play (EP), which was released on November 20. The top 12 positions in the Apple Music charts in Nigeria were held by all five of the artist’s tracks, with “Godly” claiming the top spot.
Lay was the first artist to be featured in Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign, which aims to bring attention to talented African musicians. This campaign was launched on July 3, 2020. In December of 2020, he was featured on the annual “Hot for 2021” list that is compiled by BBC Radio 1Xtra. He was the first African artist to be featured on Audiomack’s #Up Now program for rising musicians; he was included in the Montreux Jazz Festival’s list of “20 artists to watch in 2021”; and he was chosen BET’s Amplified International Artist of the Month for November 2020.
He is currently under contract with Dvpper Music Distribution in Nigeria, where he will be releasing his music. and Sire Records for the dissemination of their albums internationally. At the 2020 Headies Awards, he was one of the finalists in four different categories, and he took home the prize for Next Rated.
Lay was featured alongside fellow Nigerian singer Alpha P on the official remix of Canadian singer Justin Bieber’s hit “Peaches” that was produced by Nigerian producer Masterkraft and released on June 25, 2021 in Nigeria. A new song by Lay titled “Understand” was released as a single on July 8, 2021. Attention, the song that he and Justin Bieber worked on together and released on March 3, 2022, marked the second time that the two artists had worked together on a project.
After performing in a show in Uganda on December 14th, 2020, both Lay and Tems were subsequently detained by local authorities. The arresting Ugandan Police authority cited a violation of the COVID-19 lockdown regulations as the grounds for the individuals’ detention. The artists had the impression that they had been duped. Two days later, the Ugandan government freed the two individuals, apologized for the detention, and exonerated them of whatever crime they may have committed.
Lay has lent his support to the #EndSARS initiative that is currently underway in Nigeria. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, he stated, “People need to know these protests are solely about the people, with absolutely no political overtones.” There are no repercussions for the fact that the police harass, extort, beat, and even kill us because we are young and trendy. Because this has gone on for far too long, we are declaring that enough is enough and demanding action from the government.
