Bio

Neil Richard Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England, to businessmen David Bernard Gaiman and pharmacist Sheila Gaiman. Claire and Lizzy, his younger sisters, are his only relatives. In 1965, he and his family relocated to East Grinstead, Sussex, where his parents attended classes at the local Scientology hub to learn about “Dianetics.” From the young age of four, he already loved to read. For his dedication to reading, he was also awarded the school’s English medal.

The English novelist, short story writer, and children’s book author Neil Gaiman went to a few different schools throughout his childhood, including Fonthill School in East Grinstead and Ardingly College, before graduating from Whitgift School in Croydon in 1977.

He has written more books than almost any other writer alive today. His early years were spent reading fantasy literature, which sparked his interest in writing. He had an analytical mind even at a young age. Later in life, he developed into a literary master whose fantastic works exemplified the power of the human imagination. He has also made substantial contributions to graphic novels, television, cinema, and radio plays, in addition to novels and short tales.

His works have been recognized with several accolades, and he has garnered the admiration and affection of readers from all around the world. Several honors have been bestowed upon him, including the Bram Stoker, Nebula, and Hugo. Once “The Graveyard Book” won both the Newbery and Carnegie medals in 2008, he became the first author to do so. Book of the Year was awarded to his novel “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” in 2013.

In the early 1980s, he began his career as a journalist and interviewer. In addition, he started reviewing books for the British Fantasy Society. In 1984, his first professional short tale, “Featherquest,” was published. In 1984, he and Kim Newman collaborated on a collection of quotations.  In 1987, he gave up his career as a journalist. He began his career in comics in 1987. His friend Dave McKean and he have worked together on several graphic books, including “Violent Cases,” “Signal to Noise,” and “The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch.”

Fans of his work were so impressed that “DC Comics” commissioned him to pen a three-part series titled “Black Orchid.” His next big thing for DC Comics was the smash hit comic book series The Sandman. In 1990, he co-authored his debut novel, “Good Omens,” with Terry Pratchett. In the 1990s, he also released novels like “Neverwhere” and “Stardust.” He wrote “American Gods” in 2001.

In 2002, he published a novella for young adults named “Coraline.” Those who read “Coraline” enjoyed it. In 2008, he wrote another similar work of young adult fantasy titled “The Graveyard Book.” Anansi Boys and The Ocean at the End of the Lane are two of his other well-known works. Films like “Mirrormask” and “Beowulf” both have screenplays written by him. He has penned scripts for popular TV shows like “Babylon 5” and “Doctor Who.”

His work “Norse Mythology” came out in 2017. One of his best is the fantasy novel American Gods, published in 2001. It was an instant bestseller and earned him a number of literary honors for its imaginative take on North Germanic folklore. It shows the conflict between the older, more humble European gods and the more modern, haughty American gods. In 2008, he published The Graveyard Book, another fantastical story following the exploits of a young boy named Bod. Bod is raised by ghosts in a cemetery after the murder of his family.

He won the Hugo Award for Best Novella, the Nebula Award for Best Novella, and the Bram Stoker Award for Outstanding Writing for Young Readers in 2003 for his fantasy novel “Coraline,” which was published in 2002. His novel “Anansi Boys” won the “Mythopoeic Fantasy Award” in the “Adult Fiction” category in 2006 and the “British Fantasy Award” in the “Best Novel” category that same year.

In 2008, his masterwork “The Graveyard Book” became the first book ever to get both the “Carnegie Medal” and the “John Newbery Medal.”
In the early 1990s, when Gaiman started writing “Coraline,” gothic horror was no longer popular. Several people thought the book Coraline was too scary for kids to read. Although it was initially published for World Book Day in 2009, it went on to win the British Science Fiction Award and is now widely regarded as a literary masterpiece. In 2006, the Scottish National Theatre staged an opera adaptation of “The Wolves in the Walls,” and in 2009, Stephin Merritt turned “Coraline” into a musical.
