Bio

Born Joseph Lane on February 3, 1956, Nathan Lane is an American actor and author. Over the course of his 45-year acting career, he has played a wide variety of characters on stage and screen, including Albert in “The Birdcage,” Max Bialystock in “The Producers,” Ernie Smuntz in “Mouse Hunt,” Nathan Detroit in “Guys and Dolls,” and Pseudolus in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The Lion King’s Timon and Stuart Little’s Snowbell are just two of the many roles he’s voiced. As F. Lee Bailey, he has been in Modern Family, The Good Wife, and The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

To date, Lane has been nominated for six Tony Awards and has won three for his work in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Producers, and Angels in America. Besides Tony, the Olivier, the Lucille Lortel, and the two Obies, Lane has received six Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, and two Obies. He has also been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, two Daytime Emmys, a People’s Choice Award, and two Primetime Emmys. In addition to being inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2008, Lane was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

Joseph Nathan Lane was born on February 3, 1956, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Daniel Lane Sr. was a truck driver and an aspiring tenor who passed away in 1967 at the age of eleven from alcoholism. Nora, his mother, was a secretary and housewife who struggled with bipolar disease and passed away in the year 2000. He is the younger sibling of Daniel II and Robert Sr. It was an Irish Catholic family that raised Lane. His uncle, a Jesuit priest, inspired the choice of his name. Jersey City’s Jesuit-run St. Peter’s Preparatory School was among the Catholic schools where Lane excelled academically and artistically; he was named Best Actor there in 1974 and later got the Prep Hall of Fame Professional Achievement Award in 2011.

He had been offered a theater scholarship to attend Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and his older brother Dan came with him on his first day. After realizing the scholarship wouldn’t be enough to cover his costs, he dropped out and went to work for a year. He told his brother, “College is for people who don’t know what they want to do,” his brother said. Because there was already an actor named Joseph Lane on file with Actors’ Equity, he legally changed his name to Nathan, in homage to the role of Nathan Detroit in the musical Guys and Dolls.

He eventually made it to New York City, where his career took off with Off-Broadway plays at Second Stage Theatre, the Roundabout Theatre, and the Manhattan Theatre Club after a brief but rocky stint in stand-up comedy with partner Patrick Stack. With George C. Scott, Kate Burton, Dana Ivey, Bette Henritze, Elizabeth Hubbard, Jim Piddock, and Christine Lahti, he made his Broadway debut in a 1982 revival of Nol Coward’s Present Laughter as Roland Maule.

In 1992, he featured alongside Peter Gallagher, an American actor, and Faith Prince in a successful revival of Guys and Dolls, in which he played Nathan Detroit, the character from which he took his stage name. This performance earned him nominations for the Tony, the Drama Desk, and the Outer Critics Circle. He received the Obie for “Sustained Excellence in Performance” in 1992.

Since meeting playwright Terrence McNally in 1987, he has collaborated with him on a number of projects, including Bad Habits, Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Love!, and the Tony Award–winning The Lisbon Traviata. The Last Mile on PBS Great Performances, the Frankie and Johnny film adaptation, and the Broadway production of Valour! Compassion!.

Lane’s run of successful Broadway productions began in the early 1990s. In 1993, he played Max Prince, a character reminiscent of Sid Caesar, in Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor, a play that was in part influenced by Simon’s time spent as a young comedian penning sketches for Your Show of Shows. He earned three major theater awards in 1996 for his performance in the successful revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: the Tony, the Drama Desk, and the Outer Critics Circle.

Off-Broadway in 1998, he was seen in Jon Robin Baitz’s comedy Mizlansky/Zilinsky or ‘Schmucks,’ an updated version of 1984 original. Working with Stephen Sondheim began for him in 1989 with the Assassins. workshop. In 1999, he shared a masterclass with Wise Guys’ Victor Garber. As a continuation of his work with Sondheim, Lane rewrote the book and starred in the 2004 Lincoln Center premiere of Sondheim’s The Frogs.

Lane’s first Golden Globe nomination came for his performance in The Birdcage, which featured a song by Stephen Sondheim called “Little Dream.” The song was purportedly composed for Lane. After that, he appeared in the first film from DreamWorks Studios, the dark comedy Mouse Hunt, alongside British comic Lee Evans and Christopher Walken. Gore Verbinski, the future director of Pirates of the Caribbean, also made his directorial debut with this film.
