Naomi Shihab Nye was birth on March 12, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, to a Palestinian father and an American mother. Her father was a teacher, and her mother was a teacher. She spent her high school years living in Ramallah, which is located in Palestine, the Old City of Jerusalem, and San Antonio, which is located in Texas. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio to get her bachelor’s degree in English and world religions.

Both “19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East” (2002) and “You and Yours” (2005), which Nye published in the years after the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, were literary responses to issues of terrorism and Islamophobia. Both of these works were recognized with awards; the first was shortlisted for a National Book Award, and the second received the Isabella Gardner Poetry Award.
What Have You Lost? (1999), A Maze Me: Poems for Girls (2005), and Honeybee (2008) are three of Nye’s poetry books that are geared primarily toward younger readers (children and teenagers).Nye has given presentations at a number of primary schools as well as conducted a number of writing workshops. She has worked as a professor of creative writing at Texas State University and has previously had teaching positions at a number of prestigious colleges, including the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Between the years of 2010 and 2015, she was a member of the Board of Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets, where she represented poetry internationally as an ambassador. She was the guest editor for the Poem-a-Day program hosted by the Academy of American Poets in April 2022 and was awarded the position of Young People’s Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation for the 2019–2022 academic year.
Between the years of 2010 and 2015, Nye was a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Between the years of 2019 and 2021, he will serve as the Young People’s Poet Laureate for the Poetry Foundation.
