Nadia Elena Comăneci Conner (November 12, 1961) is a Romanian retired gymnast and five-time Olympic gold medallist in individual competitions. At the age of 14, Comăneci became the first gymnast to receive a perfect 10.0 at the Olympic Games in 1976. She received six additional perfect tens for events at the same Games (1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal), en way to three gold medals. Comăneci added two more gold medals and two more perfect tens at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Comăneci earned nine Olympic medals and four medals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships throughout the course of her career.Comăneci is a well-known gymnast who is credited with bringing the sport to a wider audience around the world. The Laureus World Sports Academy named her one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century in 2000. She has lived in the United States since 1989, when she fled communist Romania before the country’s revolution in December of that year. She then married Olympic gold medalist and founder of his own school, American Olympic gymnast Bart Conner. She became a naturalised US citizen in 2001, and she now holds dual citizenship with Romania.
Nadia Elena Comăneci was born in Onești, a tiny village in Romania’s Bacău County, in the historical region of Western Moldavia, on November 12, 1961.
She has a younger sibling and was born to Gheorghe (1936–2012) and Stefania Comăneci. In the 1970s, her parents divorced, and her father eventually relocated to Bucharest, Romania’s capital. She was brought up in the Romanian Orthodox Church, as was her younger brother Adrian. Nadia’s mother, Stefania, claimed in a 2011 interview that she put her daughter in gymnastics classes because she was a difficult child to manage because she was so full of energy and activity. Comăneci earned a degree in sports education from the Politehnica University of Bucharest after years of top-level athletic competition, allowing her to instruct gymnastics.
Comăneci began gymnastics in kindergarten with Duncan and Munteanu, coaches of a local squad called Flacăra (“The Flame”). After seeing her and a friend doing cartwheels in the schoolyard, she was chosen to attend Béla Károlyi’s experimental gymnastics school at the age of six. Károlyi was looking for young gymnasts to train. When recess ended, the girls dashed inside, and Károlyi searched the classrooms for them until he found Comăneci.Comăneci began training with Károlyi in 1968, when she was seven years old. Béla and his wife, Márta, started a gymnastics school in Onești, and she was one of the first students. Comăneci was able to live at home for many years since he was a town resident; the majority of his classmates boarded at the school. In 1970, Comăneci joined her hometown team and won the Romanian Nationals at the age of nine, making her the youngest gymnast ever to do so. She competed in her first international competition in 1971, a dual junior meet between Romania and Yugoslavia, when she won her first all-around title and helped her team win gold. She competed as a junior in a number of national competitions in Romania as well as dual meetings with Hungary, Italy, and Poland during the next few years. At the Junior Friendship Tournament (Druzhba), an important international event for junior gymnasts, she won the all-around gold, as well as the vault and uneven bars crowns, when she was 11 years old.
At the age of 13, Comăneci nearly swept the 1975 European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Skien, Norway, with her first significant international success. With the exception of the floor exercise, she won the all-around and gold medals in every event. That year, she won the all-around at the “Champions All” competition and finished first in the all-around, vault, beam, and bars at the Romanian National Championships. Comăneci won gold in the all-around and balancing beam, as well as silvers in the vault, floor, and bars, during the pre-Olympic test event in Montreal. Nellie Kim, a talented Soviet gymnast, won gold in both events and would go on to be one of Comăneci’s biggest competitors for the next five years.
She’s still a part of the Olympic Games. One of her perfect-10 Montreal uneven bars routines was included in an Adidas advertisement during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Comăneci and her husband Bart Conner both offered television commentary for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Comăneci and former basketball player John Amaechi carried the Olympic torch to the roof of the O2 Arena on July 21, 2012, as part of the torch relay for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. Comăneci appeared in a TIDE commercial with Simone Biles and three-time Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes prior to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She also contributed daily commentary to the late-night show É Campeo, televised on Brazil’s SporTV, among other Olympic champions such as Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, and Conner.
Comăneci is also heavily interested in charity fundraising. She directly funded the Nadia Comăneci Children’s Clinic in Bucharest, which offers low-cost and free medical and social services to Romanian children. She was named honorary consul general of Romania to the United States in 2003 by the Romanian government to handle bilateral relations between the two countries. Furthermore, both Comăneci and Conner are Special Olympics athletes.Comăneci took part in season seven of Donald Trump’s reality show The Celebrity Apprentice in order to generate money for charity. In the second episode, Comăneci was a member of the all-female “The Empresario” team, which was defeated by “The Hydra” team (all men). Comăneci’s fundraising effort was thwarted when Trump fired her as a result of the loss. “Had a lot of fun,” Comăneci later said about her appearance on the show. It was all for a good cause, so I did it.
