Michael Paul Lookinland is a well-known American actor and cameraman. He was born on December 19, 1960, in the United States. He is most well-known for his performance as Bobby Brady, the youngest sibling, on the American television comedy The Brady Bunch, which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1974 and spawned a number of sequels and spinoffs. Lookinland was born in Mount Pleasant, Utah to parents Paul, who was a principal at Steven White Junior High in Carson, California, and Karen Lookinland.
Lookinland was the youngest of three children. Michael was born over the Christmas break in 1960 while his parents, Paul and Karen, were in Spring City, Missouri, visiting family. At the time, Paul and Karen lived in the Los Angeles region. His grandfather worked as a manager at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. Theresa, his sister, and Todd, his brother, both appeared in The Blue Bird alongside Elizabeth Taylor. He has two other siblings. Later on, Todd would make an appearance in an episode of The Brady Bunch that would go on to serve as the pilot for a spin-off series called Kelly’s Kids. The series would be about a white father, a black mother, and an Asian son. The series did not get purchased.
Michael was baptized and confirmed into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was twelve years old. At the age of seven, he made his professional acting debut. By the time he was nine years old, he had already acted in a number of television advertisements, including ones for toys, Cheerios cereal, and Band-Aid bandages, among others. Prior to being featured in The Brady Bunch, Lookinland had a career as an actor in television commercials, appearing in perhaps thirty of them.
His parents chose Bobby on The Brady Bunch over Eddie on The Courtship of Eddie’s Father because they believed it would be healthier for him to be around other children closer to his age rather than being the only child on an all-adult cast (Brandon Cruz was eventually cast in the role of Eddie). He had been offered two roles: Eddie on The Courtship of Eddie’s Father and Bobby on The Brady Bunch.
He was born with hair that is naturally sandy in tone and wavy. The natural light brown hue of his hair did not go well with the dark brown color of his TV-siblings Peter or Greg’s hair, so it was dyed dark brown and straightened. Because of the intense heat produced by the lights on stage, his dye would occasionally run down his face. His natural hair color was allowed to be shown in the final two seasons of ‘The Brady Bunch,’ which aired from 1974 to 1975.
In the animated picture The Point! from 1971, Lookinland performed the voice of the character Oblio. Shortly after filming concluded on the final season of The Brady Bunch, he made an appearance opposite Jennifer Jones and Paul Newman in the disaster film blockbuster The Towering Inferno, which was released in 1974, and on the television show The Secrets of Isis, which aired in the 1970s.
Lookinland has continued to play Bobby Brady in all of the several sequels and spin-offs that have been made based on the original show. In 1976, he was uninterested in participating in The Brady Bunch Hour, so he asked for double the offered money in the hopes that his character would be recast. However, his request was accepted, which resulted in increased salaries for all of the cast members. In 1976, he asked for double the offered price in the hopes that his role would be recast.
In addition, he reprised his character in the 1981 television movie The Brady Girls Get Married, the 1988 holiday special A Very Brady Christmas, and again in the 1990 sequel series The Bradys. In the latter, Bobby Brady was injured in a racing car accident, which resulted in him having to use a wheelchair for the remainder of the series. After working in the television industry for a number of years, Lookinland had an uncredited appearance in the television movie Growing Up Brady, which aired in 2000, playing the role of a camera operator working on the set of an episode of The Brady Bunch. In addition to that, he appeared in the 2019 HGTV television series A Very Brady Renovation alongside the rest of the cast of The Brady Bunch.
After retiring from the entertainment industry, Lookinland now runs a company in Salt Lake City, Utah, that manufactures beautiful concrete (as of the year 2019). In 2021, Lookinland made his comeback to the acting world when he starred in the Christmas movie Blending Christmas for Lifetime alongside his Brady Bunch co-stars Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, Susan Olsen, and Robbie Rist. Blending Christmas was released in 2021.
Lookinland, Knight, and Williams participated as “Mummies” in the eighth season of The Masked Singer in 2022. They were ousted on “TV Theme Night” alongside “Fortune Teller” Daymond John. In 1978, Lookinland received her high school diploma from Chadwick School, a private institution that is situated on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the city of Los Angeles, California.
In addition, he went to Hollywood Professional School during the time that he was working on The Brady Bunch, right alongside his TV siblings Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, and Susan Olsen. After finishing high school, Lookinland decided he wanted to move away from Los Angeles. He relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, with the intention of enrolling at the University of Utah there. However, he decided against continuing his education and instead pursued a job as a production assistant and camera operator.
On May 1st, 1987, he wed Kelly Wermuth, who had been born in 1962 and was an actor on occasion. Both of their sons were born in Utah: Scott Michael Lookinland (born July 6, 1990), who played him in Growing Up Brady (2000), and Joseph Kelly “Joe” Lookinland (born August 6, 1993). Both of their children were raised in Utah. Together, they have two children. Both Lookinland and Wermuth had roles in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, with Lookinland serving as a production assistant and Wermuth appearing in both films as an extra.
Lookinland identifies himself as a “Deadhead” and claims to have been to more than one hundred events and concerts put on by the Grateful Dead. Wonderful Broken Thing, a band from California that plays skate rock, released their first full-length album, titled “Looking For Mike Lookinland,” in 1989. Several tracks from this album were featured in the H-Street video titled “Hokus Pokus.”
