Michael James Hucknall was born in the United Kingdom on June 8, 1960. Hucknall rose to prominence in the music industry as the frontman of the soul-influenced pop band Simply Red in the 1980s. The group went on to have a successful 25-year run and sell more than 50 million albums. Hucknall has been called “one of the truly great blue-eyed soul singers” by the Australian music magazine Rhythms, and “the most magnificent voice this side of Motown” by the British music magazine Q.
Hucknall was born on June 8, 1960, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. The emotional turmoil he experienced after his mother’s abandonment when he was three prompted him to pen “Holding Back the Years,” one of Simply Red’s most successful songs. His father, Reginald, was a barber in Stockport, and the family lived in Denton. Hucknall claims he had a wonderful childhood up until the age of ten when he began to have disagreements with his father “since there was no lady to act as referee.”
He went to Audenshaw School, then on to Tameside College and the School of Art at Manchester Polytechnic to study fine art; he stayed in Hulme during his time there. He lost touch with his mother, Maureen, until the mid-1990s, when she moved to Dallas, Texas, in the United States. He had only seen her twice since she left as of an interview in 2008. His mother’s family is Irish, and his paternal grandmother was also Irish. His Jewish great-grandmother was his mother’s mother.
Hucknall was a fan of the Sex Pistols and attended their June 1976 show at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall. In the late ’70s, he got his start as a member of the band Frantic Elevators, thanks to his enthusiasm for the local music scene. He later recorded a cover of “Holding Back the Years” with Simply Red, which appeared on one of four singles by The Frantic Elevators.
He was the band’s most recognizable member and public face as lead singer and driving force behind Simply Red. Album covers and music videos often featured close-ups of his face and long, red hair. Hucknall is an outspoken political activist and longtime Labour Party supporter. He publicly endorsed the Labour Party in 1997, the year it returned to power after 18 years in opposition thanks to Tony Blair’s resounding victory in the general election. Hucknall was included on a 1998 list of party donors who gave over $5,000.
In 2003, Hucknall expressed his support for Tony Blair’s position on Operation Iraqi Freedom, saying that he had “greater respect for Blair than ever,” and he noted that British critics of the war were fortunate to live in a society where they could voice their views freely. In 2008, Hucknall said that the party had lost its financial support due to his moral opposition to the war.
During the 2015 United Kingdom general election, Hucknall remarked that Ed Miliband “veer(ed) close to Marxism,” and that the public had acted “with collective wisdom” by electing a Conservative government, whom he called “the inheritor of the Blairite mantel.” For what he saw as Jeremy Corbyn’s lackluster support of the Remain side during the 2016 Brexit referendum, he labeled him a “shabby, spineless coward” the following year. Hucknall announced in 2017 that he was no longer associated with any political party, claiming he did so because he disagreed with Corbyn’s policies and his front bench team.
Romy True Hucknall was born in June 2007 to Hucknall and his partner, Gabriella Wesberry. Forter Castle in Glenisla, Perthshire, Scotland dates back to the 16th century, and it was there that Hucknall and Wesberry tied the knot in 2010. He lives on the Irish estate he and his bandmate Chris De Margary bought near the town of Cloghan in County Donegal and where he spends a great deal of his time. Hucknall and De Margary both have a passion for fishing, thus they use the estate to host tourists interested in fishing and hunting. Hucknall and his Irish next-door neighbor finally resolved their long-running dispute over hunting and fishing rights in March 2014. When the case first began in 2009, Judge O’Hagan warned the parties that unless they came to an agreement quickly, it may go on for years.
Simply Red’s roster shifted frequently, but Hucknall was always at the helm; in a sense, the band became an extension of his solo career. Despite a decline in their popularity in the United States in the early 1990s, Simply Red remained a mainstay on the U.K. charts far into the 2000s. The group even released the best-selling album of 1991, which sold over eight million copies in just two years.
In 2008, Hucknall released a true solo effort titled Tribute to Bobby, which featured him performing the music of bluesman Bobby “Blue” Bland. But, in 2009, Hucknall’s focus shifted to an unexpected collaboration: he ended up replacing Rod Stewart in a reunited Faces. The record reached No. 18 in the UK and did well in Europe. This partnership first materialized during a benefit event in 2009, but continued through 2010 and 2011 on the road and culminated in a performance at the band’s 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Hucknall resumed his solo career later that year, with the October 2012 release of the covers album American Soul.
