Dominic Lawson, son of Nigel and former editor of the Sunday Telegraph (and thus qualified to judge a man of the people), wrote an article for the Independent this week in which he criticized alternative comedy as “merely a kind of commercialized Tourette syndrome” and claimed that McIntyre was a riposte to that style. As he puts it in the book, “the man appeared out of nowhere and he was enormously hilarious without ever being harsh to anyone, not even politicians.” He made light of the boring routines of middle-class housewives. Finding humor in everyday life is a skill that not everyone possesses.
The naysayers of McIntyre’s comedic skills are out of luck, as Lawson is absolutely right. He has excellent performance chops and knows how to craft an act for maximum impact. His stage presence is electrifying. McIntyre’s boundless enthusiasm is a stark contrast to that of other stand-up artists; his act is just campy enough to appeal to a British audience. As an added bonus, his expression suggests that he is enjoying himself immensely. Since this is the case, it becomes useful.
Furthermore, I’m willing to bet that many of his opinions are insightful. At the very least, “Everyone is humiliated by passport photographs,” is one of his most quotable lines. Both “Who phones radio stations with travel updates?” and “The quality of the week between Christmas and New Year’s is in question.” The Guardian’s comedy critic, Brian Logan, says that the new McIntyre show doesn’t have much going on and that in the past, McIntyre has relied on his physical skills to bolster a joke. When it comes to writing new jokes, many comedians, especially those who perform frequently, find it difficult.
However, the fact that he finds amusement in “HD ready” may not be the only reason Lawson and the Mail have taken a liking to McIntyre. Most people that visit the Birmingham NEC are not elitist oenophiles from prestigious universities, as is sometimes assumed; rather, they tend to be middle class. McIntyre’s comedy is more subtle than that of other stand-up comedians, who typically lean toward the extreme. When he makes the remark that “Man United” sounds like a homosexual club, he makes a point of dancing around the platform. He isn’t as provocative as Frankie Boyle or Bernard Manning, but he still gets his point across.
