Michael Lewis Bio

Michael Lewis was born on in 1960. His mother was an activist, and his father was a corporate lawyer. In college, he majored in art history at the prestigious Princeton. Lewis initially decided to pursue a profession in the arts. After finishing college, he found work with a New York art dealer but left when he learned there were few options for someone with a degree in art history. Lewis changed his major to economics at the London School of Economics in 1985 after becoming disillusioned with his prior field of study. He changed his major to economics and pursued a career in finance since he saw it as one of his few opportunities to earn a living wage.

After finishing up at the London School of Economics, he found work with the major Wall Street investment bank Salomon Brothers in New York. After working for the corporation in New York for a while, he was transferred to London to sell bonds. In retrospect, however, he would not have a positive opinion of his tenure at Salomon Brothers or any other Wall Street firm; he saw that these businesses were managed inefficiently and showed little concern for their investors or the American public at large. He quit after realizing the industry wasn’t for him and is now working as a financial journalist.

Liar’s Poker was Lewis’s debut novel, released in 1989. This book is about the author’s experiences as a bond salesman on Wall Street in the late 1980s, where he witnessed widespread corruption and inefficiencies. The first book was a smashing success, and it quickly established itself as one of the seminal works of 1980s Wall Street. It also solidified Lewis’s standing as an insightful and discerning journalist in the field of finance. His second book, 1999’s The New New Thing, focused on Silicon Valley’s rapid-fire pursuit of innovation.

While not as well received, this book nonetheless added to Lewis’ growing body of work on the subject of personal finance. After that, Lewis published two books, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and The Blind Side. He was able to polish his analytical and statistical writing skills in these two publications, which focused on the business side of sports. The film adaptation of Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt, was released in 2011.

Despite Lewis’ prolific output of best-sellers, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine stands apart for its detailed examination of a topic that is both complex and widespread, affecting the entire country in 2008 and beyond. Lewis’s 2010 book, The Big Short, profiles several individuals who, despite widespread denial, had correctly predicted the housing market collapse. FrontPoint partner Steve Eisman was one of them; another was Scion Capital’s owner, the reclusive and eccentric Michael Burry.

These two individuals, along with the founders of Cornwall Capital and the aggressive mortgage dealer Greg Lippmann of Deutsche Bank, saw the signals of the impending housing catastrophe early on. As a result of the housing bubble, they made the decision to wager against the subprime mortgage sector. Their gamble, mocked at the time as impractical and naive, paid out enormously in the end. Lewis explores this phenomenon in The Big Short, asking how it was that a handful of men were able to see what the rest of Wall Street missed.

He delves more into the aftermath of the housing collapse and the reasons why most of Wall Street missed it. His explanations of how Wall Street operates are clear and accessible even to people without financial expertise. The Big Short was a New York Times bestseller for an incredible 28 weeks. It won the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights Book Award in 2011, and it was also a finalist for the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award in 2010.

A comedy-drama film adaptation starring Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt was directed by Adam McKay and released to positive reviews in 2015. The movie version of the book was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Film Adaptation, all of which it went on to win for Best Adapted Screenplay. The book and the movie were both well-received for their straightforward and honest depiction of the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Michael Lewis’s self-assurance is supernatural. You wouldn’t expect someone with so many New York Times bestsellers and three of them turned into movies to lack self-assurance, but he showed it long before he became famous.

When he was a student at Princeton, his thesis advisor discouraged him from becoming a writer. Though he took that advice to heart and worked as a gopher for an art dealer, an apprentice to a cabinet builder, and a tour guide right after college. He entered the financial sector after finishing graduate school. But he kept up his writing during that time. The positive reactions he got from his letters to loved ones gave him hope. Even before the invention of email, letters like these were widely circulated and read by many people.

Writing about his time at Solomon Brothers in the book Liar’s Poker was Lewis’s first foray onto the worldwide scene. By injecting himself into the narrative of this book about the greed of 1980s Wall Street, he would be taking on some of the most influential officials of his old business.

After the popularity of his debut novel, Michael Lewis has written a number of other works about the financial industry (The Big Short, Flash Boys, Boomerang, and Panic, to name a few). Although Lewis is best known for his sports-themed novels like Moneyball and The Blind Side, he has also authored works that explore more introspective themes like parenthood and childhood baseball coaches like Home Game. He’s that unique breed of nonfiction writer who can write about whatever interests him, and his readers will still read it.
