Martin was impressed by Douglas’ performance in a segment of The F.B.I. (1965). In addition to receiving nominations for an Emmy Award for his acting on three occasions in a row, Douglas directed two episodes of the series. Douglas spent the majority of his time during the annual breaks in the filming schedule for The Streets of San Francisco (1972), devoting the majority of his time to his film production company, Big Stick Productions, Ltd., which produced several short subjects in the early 1970s.

After being rejected by a number of major motion picture studios, Douglas forged a relationship with Saul Zaentz, an executive in the record business, and the two of them began the process of hiring the cast and crew for the film.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), which was a commercial and critical success, won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress, and went on to gross more than $180 million at the box office.
