American heavy metal band Metallica was formed. Drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield founded the band in Los Angeles in 1981, and it has called San Francisco home for the most of its existence. Along with Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer, the band was one of the “big four” bands that helped create thrash metal because of its fast tempos, instrumentals, and violent musicianship. Hetfield and Ulrich, who founded the band and are its main authors, as well as veteran lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, make up Metallica’s current line-up. Former band members Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, and Jason Newsted are bassists, as are guitarist Dave Mustaine, who left the group to start Megadeth. Metallica spearheaded the lawsuit against the peer-to-peer file-sharing website Napster in 2000. The band and numerous other musicians accused the company of sharing their copyright-protected works without permission, and the cases ended in a settlement.
The renowned 2004 documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster focused on Metallica and chronicled the band’s internal conflicts at the time of the tumultuous recording of its eighth album, St. Anger. Metallica was admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Metallica: Through the Never, a 2013 concert movie in which the band performed live against a fictitious thriller plot, was co-written by the band and co-starred Dane DeHaan. Drummer seeking for other metal musicians to jam with Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, and Iron Maiden, according to a Los Angeles journal called The Recycler advertising made by Danish drummer Lars Ulrich in late 1981. Leather Charm guitarists James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner responded to the post. Ulrich asked Metal Blade Records founder Brian Slagel whether he could record a song for the label’s next compilation album, Metal Massacre, despite the fact that he had not yet formed a band. Slagel agreed, and Ulrich asked Hetfield to play rhythm guitar and sing.
Five months after Ulrich and Hetfield’s initial encounter, the band was formally established on October 28, 1981. Ron Quintana, an acquaintance of Ulrich’s, suggested the band name while discussing MetalMania or Metallica as possible titles for a magazine. After hearing them both, Ulrich preferred the latter of the two titles and advised Quintana to use MetalMania instead. After seeing Dave Mustaine’s high-end guitar setup, Ulrich and Hetfield hired him after he responded to a lead guitarist job posting. Metallica recorded “Hit the Lights,” its first original song, at the beginning of 1982 for the compilation Metal Massacre I. While Lars Ulrich played drums and Lloyd Grant is credited with a guitar solo, Hetfield sang and played bass and rhythm guitar.
Metal Massacre I was released on June 14, 1982, however the band was upset since early pressings of the album wrongly referred to them as “Mettallica.” The band’s first live performance was on March 14, 1982, at Radio City in Anaheim, California, with recently hired bassist Ron McGovney. The song spread via word of mouth. They were picked to open for the British heavy metal band Saxon at one show of their 1982 U.S. tour, which was their first live success. It was Metallica’s second performance. Early in 1982, Metallica created Power Metal, a demo whose title was taken from Quintana’s initial business cards.
In response to the Anthrax song “Metal Thrashing Mad,” Kerrang! journalist Malcolm Dome first used the term “thrash metal” in February 1984. Hetfield had previously referred to Metallica’s music as “power metal.” Ulrich and Hetfield went to a gig at Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood in late 1982, including bassist Cliff Burton from the band Trauma. Burton’s use of a wah-wah pedal “blew them away,” and they invited him to join Metallica. Due to their opinion that McGovney “didn’t contribute anything, he just followed,” Hetfield and Mustaine wanted him to depart. The band had to relocate to El Cerrito in the San Francisco Bay Area, which Burton originally rejected, but by the end of the year, he had agreed to. The Stone nightclub hosted Metallica’s first live performance with Burton in March 1983, and the Megaforce demo was the band’s first recording with Burton.
Metallica has released eleven studio albums, four live albums, 12 video albums, a cover album, two extended plays, 37 singles, and 39 music videos. They have also performed twice with the San Francisco Symphony. The group has received 23 nominations for nine Grammy Awards, and each of its last six studio albums, starting with Metallica, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. As of 2018, Metallica was one of the bands with the highest global record sales, with more than 125 million albums sold. Magazines like Rolling Stone, which placed the band No. 61 on their list of the 100 Best Performers of All Time, have identified Metallica as one of the greatest artists of all time. With 58 million records sold in the United States as of 2017, Metallica is the third-best-selling musical artist since Nielsen SoundScan started keeping track of sales in 1991.
Master of Puppets, Metallica’s third album, which is regarded as the band’s best effort and one of the hardest metal albums, initially achieved commercial success in 1986. Metallica received their first Grammy Award nomination for its following album,…And Justice for All (1988). Metallica’s self-titled fifth album, released in 1991, was the group’s first to focus less on thrash metal and appeal to a wider demographic. It has since seen significant financial success and has sold over 16 million copies in the US, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan period. Metallica returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic, which garnered similar accolades to that of the band’s previous albums, after experimenting with other genres and directions in later releases. The group’s 10th studio album, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, was released after that in 2016. Its 11th album, 72 Seasons, is scheduled to be released in 2023.
