Mem Fox was born on March 5, 1946, in Melbourne, Australia, to parents Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge and Nancy. Her family moved to Africa when she was just six months old. Jan Delacourt and Alison Partridge are her younger sisters’ names. Her father worked as a missionary at the “Hope Fountain Mission” in Zimbabwe. Her grandfather Wilfrid Partridge was a resident of Adelaide, South Australia, so in 1970 the couple made the move there to be closer to him. ‘Flinders University’ there allowed her to pursue her interest in children’s literature. While in college, she completed an assignment that would later become the backbone of her debut novel, Possum Magic. Since the publication of this book in 1983, she has written several others, both fiction, and nonfiction, with a focus on children.
In the 1980s, she also wrote three nonfiction books: “Thereby Hangs a Tale,” “How to Teach Drama to Infants Without Really Crying,” and “Teaching Drama to Young Children,” all published in the United States. Her nonfiction publications from the 1990s include Radical Reflections: Passionate Opinions on Teaching, Learning, and Living and English Essentials: The Wouldn’t-Be-Without-It Guide to Writing Well. Time for Bed, Tough Boris, Wombat Divine, Boo to a Goose, Whoever You Are, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, and Sleepy Bears are just a few of the many children’s books she penned in the decade between 1990 and 1999.
Her autobiography, “Mem’s the Word,” was published in Australia in 1988, and in the United States as “Dear Mem Fox” in 1990. In 1984, her book “Possum Magic” won first place in the “New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards.” For her many contributions to children’s literature, she was awarded the Dromkeen Medal in 1990. The ‘Flinders University Chancellor’s Medal’ was presented to her in 1994, following the ‘Australia Day Honours medal she got in 1993.
She received the Convocation Medal from Flinders University in 2001, and the SA Great Award the same year. The following year, she received the “Woman of Achievement” award from “Zonta International.” She met her future husband, Malcolm Fox, at a London theater school, and the couple tied the knot in 1969. The happy couple now had a daughter whom they named Chlo Fox. Later in life, Chlo worked as a journalist, then as a teacher, and now she is a member of parliament for the district of Bright in the Australian state of South Australia.
