Melissa Sue Anderson is a Canadian-American actress who was born on September 26, 1962, in the United States. After making appearances in a number of advertisements in the Los Angeles area, she launched her career as a kid actor. In recognition of her performance as Mary Ingalls in the NBC drama series Little House on the Prairie, Anderson was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Anderson is best recognized for this role, which earned her the nomination. She is also well known for her performances in movies, such as Vivian in Midnight Offerings, Ginny in the slasher film Happy Birthday to Me, and Alex in the ABC Afterschool Special, Which Mother Is Mine. Her career began in the 1950s and continued into the 1980s.
In 2007, Anderson completed the process to become a naturalized citizen of Canada. An autobiographical account of her time spent performing in Little House on the Prairie, “The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House” was released by her in the year 2010 with the same title. Anderson was the second of two girls to be born to James and Marion Anderson. When Anderson was seven years old, her family moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Los Angeles area and settled in the San Fernando Valley. When she was 13 years old, her parents had a divorce, and from that point on, her mother brought her up in the Roman Catholic faith. Anderson began his career in front of the camera at an early age, making appearances in advertisements for Mattel and Sears.
Anderson got her start in the entertainment industry after a dancing instructor strongly suggested that her parents hire an agency for her. After making appearances in many advertisements, she quickly became in demand for parts in various television shows. Her debut was on the television show Bewitched in an episode from 1972 called “Tabitha’s First Day of School.” Another remarkable part of her early career was playing Millicent, the girl in The Brady Bunch who gave Bobby a passionate kiss. In the same year, she also made a guest appearance in an episode of Shaft.
Anderson was just 11 years old when she was cast as Mary Ingalls in the television series Little House on the Prairie. She would go on to star in the series for a total of eight seasons, starting in 1974 and departing after the seventh season; although, she would return for three episodes of the eighth season in late 1981. Her run on the show began in 1974. In 1976, Michael Landon approached Anderson with the proposition of having her play a part in the autobiographical film he was making called The Loneliest Runner. Anderson said that she was “very thrilled to have been asked” to portray the role of Nancy Rizzi, the first girlfriend of John Curtis, and she agreed to do so. In the television movie James at 15, which was released in 1977, she appeared with Kerwin for the second time in the role of the love interest.
She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1978 for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Little House on the Prairie, and she ended up winning the award for her performance in Which Mother Is Mine?, which was an ABC Afterschool Special in 1979. Both of these performances were shown on ABC. In the television film Survival of Dana, which was produced by CBS and shown in 1979, she portrayed the title character of Dana Lee Gilbert, a student from North Dakota who had transferred to a school in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.
For her performance in Little House on the Prairie in 1980, Anderson was given Spain’s “TP de Oro” Award, which is widely regarded as the country’s most prestigious honor in the field of television, in the category of “Best Foreign Actress.” This occurred after a successful trip that was taken to Spain in 1979 in order to participate as a guest on the show 625 Lineas which was broadcast on RTVE. As a result of her work in the horror movie Happy Birthday to Me, which was produced in Canada, she was considered for a Young Artist Award in the year 1981. After leaving Little House, she continued playing in television shows such as The Equalizer, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, CHiPs, and Murder, She Wrote. In addition, she was the associate producer for the next-to-last television project that Michael Landon created before he passed away, which was titled Where Pigeons Go to Die.
In 1998, she was recognized for her achievements in the Western performing arts by being inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1999, she co-starred in the ill-fated television series Partners starring Heather Langenkamp. Partners was canceled after just one season. In the 2014 neo-noir mystery comedy-drama film Veronica Mars, Anderson had an uncredited cameo as Stosh’s mother. Veronica Mars was directed by Rob Thomas. The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House was the title of Anderson’s autobiography, which was published in the year 2010. The book, which is mostly based on her life during her years as a child star in Little House on the Prairie, includes behind-the-scenes tales and anecdotes about the program itself, its stars, guest stars, and staff members. The book is primarily based on her life during her years as a child star in Little House on the Prairie.
The book also discusses her career both before and after the success of Little House on the Prairie, as well as the side projects she worked on during those years and how her professional life impacted her personal life. In 1990, Anderson wed Michael Sloan, a television writer, and producer who had previously worked on shows such as “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” and “The Equalizer.” The pair is parents to a girl named Piper as well as a boy named Griffin. The family made the move to Montreal in 2002 and were naturalized Canadian citizens on July 1 of the following year, which was Canada Day.
