Melanie Richards Griffith is an American actress and film producer. She was born on August 9, 1957, in the United States. She started her career in the 1970s, acting in a number of independent thriller films before she became successful in the mainstream in the middle of the 1980s. Melanie Richards Griffith was born in Manhattan, New York City, on August 9, 1957. Her mother, actress Tippi Hedren, and her father, Peter Griffith, a former child stage actor, and advertising executive, were her parents. Griffith’s mother’s ancestry is Swedish, Norwegian, and German, while her paternal ancestry is Welsh. Her father is of Welsh descent. When Griffith was two years old, her parents divorced, and two years later, when she was four, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother. Her parents remarried two years after that, but they parted again when Griffith was two.
Following the conclusion of his marriage to Hedren, her father wed the model and actress Nanita Greene and welcomed two more children into the world: Tracy Griffith, who also pursued a career in acting, and Clay A. Griffith, who went on to become a set designer. When Griffith was only seven years old, her mother wed Noel Marshall, a successful agency and producer. Griffith made his debut in front of the camera in the films Smith! and The Harrad Experiment as a background actor.
While working on the set of the latter picture, 14-year-old Griffith struck up a conversation with 22-year-old actor Don Johnson. The two got together romantically, and their courtship resulted in a marriage that lasted from January to July 1976. Following the conclusion of her marriage to Johnson, Griffith moved on to a relationship with Ryan O’Neal. Tatum O’Neal alleges in her book, A Paper Life, that at the period of her father’s connection with Griffith, Griffith dragged her into an orgy with Maria Schneider and a male hairdresser. This allegedly took place during the time when Griffith was seeing Tatum’s father.
At the age of 17, she played a runaway teen in Arthur Penn’s film noir Night Moves, in which she was pursued across the United States by a private detective played by Gene Hackman. This was her first prominent role in a film. It was a contentious choice to show her naked on screen in a few different situations throughout the movie. Griffith’s performance in Night Moves brought her a lot of attention, and as a result, she was cast in two movies in 1975: the comedy Smile, in which she played a pageant contestant, and Stuart Rosenberg’s The Drowning Pool, a thriller in which she portrayed the daughter of a Louisiana woman who was involved in a criminal investigation. Both of these films were released in 1975.
She was also given the title of Miss Golden Globe in 1975, during which time she volunteered her services at the Golden Globe Awards. In a contemporary feature of Griffith that was published in Newsweek, the following was said of her appearance at the time: “She has the figure of a sensual woman, the pouting, chipmunk face of a teenager, and the voice of a child–and, now, she’s exposing them all.” In the sports drama One on One, which was directed by Lamont Johnson and released in 1977, she had a small supporting role as a hitchhiker. In his review of the film, John Simon stated that “Griffith is miscast in a PG picture, where she is obliged to hide her one talent “.
Griffith had a role in the Israeli experimental movie The Garden, in which she played a naked and mute woman in Jerusalem who a man takes for an angel despite the fact that she is naked. In the same year, she appeared in the film Joyride as a supporting character opposite Robert Carradine. In the film, she played a young woman who leaves California with her lover in the hopes of beginning a fishing enterprise in Alaska. During her formative years as a child and adolescent, she split her time between living with her father in New York and with her mother in Antelope Valley, California, where her mother established the Shambala animal sanctuary. She was raised in both places.
After a brief stint as a child model and a few appearances in advertising, Griffith eventually decided to give up the modeling industry, citing her acute shyness as the reason. She made a cameo appearance in the 1964 film Marnie directed by Alfred Hitchcock, in which she played a young version of her mother’s character in a flashback scene. Griffith was able to skip a grade level and graduate from high school at the age of 16 because she was so far ahead in her academics while she was enrolled at the Hollywood Professional School.
She was born in Manhattan, New York City, to actress Tippi Hedren and advertising executive Peter Griffith, but she spent the majority of her childhood in Los Angeles, where she attended the Hollywood Professional School and graduated when she was 16 years old. The neo-noir film Night Moves was directed by Arthur Penn and starred Gene Hackman and 17-year-old Melanie Griffith. Night Moves was released in 1975. Later in her career, she became well known for her performance as an actor in pornographic films in the thriller Body Double, directed by Brian De Palma. For this role, she was awarded the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. Griffith’s subsequent performance in the comedy Something Wild received critical acclaim before she was cast in 1988’s Working Girl, which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won her a Golden Globe. In addition, Griffith’s performance in Working Girl earned her a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
She received Golden Globe nominations for her performances in Buffalo Girls and as Marion Davies in RKO 281, while also earning a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for her performances in Shining Through. Additionally, she received nominations for Crazy in Alabama and John Waters’ cult film Cecil B. Demented. In the 1990s, Griffith played a number of roles that were met with a variety of responses from critics. Other works include John Schlesinger’s Pacific Heights, Milk Money, the neo-noir film Mulholland Falls, Adrian Lyne’s Lolita, and Another Day in Paradise, in which she played the role of Charlotte Haze.
After that, she became known for her role as Barbara Marx in the 2003 film The Night We Called It a Day, and she spent the bulk of the 2000s making guest appearances on television programs such as Nip/Tuck, Raising Hope, and Hawaii Five-0. After performing on stage in London, in 2003 she made her debut on Broadway in a revival of the musical Chicago, which was met with acclaim from critics and audiences alike. In the 2010s, Griffith made her comeback to the film industry by starring in the science-fiction picture Autómata opposite her husband Antonio Banderas and appearing as an acting instructor in James Franco’s The Disaster Artist.
