Masahiro Sakurai Bio

Masahiro Sakurai is a Japanese video game director and game designer. He is best known for creating the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series of video games. Sakurai was born on August 3, 1970. In addition to his involvement in those series, he directed Kid Icarus: Uprising in 2012 and was the lead designer of the game Meteos, which was released in 2005. Sakurai was a former employee of HAL Laboratory. He left the firm in 2003, and in 2005, he and his wife Michiko Sakurai, who was also a former employee of HAL Laboratory, created Sora Ltd., a shell company that works on a freelance basis on a variety of projects. Michiko Sakurai also worked at HAL Laboratory.

He has also done voice acting work in some of his games, most notably giving the voice of King Dedede in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and the Super Smash Bros. series. He was also an author for Famitsu magazine from 2003 until 2021, writing a weekly column for the publication from 2003 until 2021. Sakurai has been posting videos to his YouTube channel, Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, since the year 2022. In these videos, he covers game design as well as his professional life. When Sakurai was 19 years old, he invented the character Kirby and directed his first video game, which was titled Kirby’s Dream Land. This was one of Sakurai’s initial experiences in the video game industry.

After becoming dissatisfied with the passively imposed equalization by HAL, Sakurai resigned from his position at the company on August 5, 2003, putting a stop to his work on the Kirby series. “It was tough for me to see that every time I made a new game, people automatically assumed that a sequel was coming,” Sakurai remarked in an interview with Nintendo Dream two weeks after he resigned from his position at HAL. “It was tough for me to see that every time I made a new game, people automatically assumed that a sequel was coming.” He gave the following explanation: “Even if it’s a sequel, lots of people have to give their all to make a game, but some people think the sequel process happens naturally.”

Soon after that, Sakurai started working on a project with Q Entertainment, alongside Tetsuya Mizuguchi. Both of them were working on the same thing. Meteos, a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS, was the product of this partnership and was released in 2005. On September 30, 2005, Sakurai made the announcement that he had established his own business, which he named Sora Ltd.

It was revealed that development was beginning on not one but two new games, although no information about the games’ titles has been made public. During the press conference that Nintendo held at E3 2005, Satoru Iwata, president of HAL Laboratory, made a promise that an online version of the Super Smash Bros. game would be available on the Nintendo Wii. This promise was made in regard to the future of the Super Smash Bros. series.

Sakurai made the announcement in issue #885 of the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that he would be working on Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii both as a director and a game designer. The fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl was published in 2008 after being supported in development by staff members who had been borrowed from 19 other developer studios. Sakurai had been keeping the Super Smash Bros Brawl website, which is known as the Smash Bros. Dojo, up to date by making daily updates. He began revealing secrets and gameplay details related to Brawl through the site one year before the game was officially released.

Between May 22, 2007, and April 14, 2008, the Smash Bros. Dojo received consistent updates on a regular basis. It was revealed on the final day of updates that Sakurai had given the voice for both King Dedede and Dedede in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was the game that made this revelation public. In collaboration with Nintendo, he and his company, Sora Ltd., established a first-party studio known as Project Sora. At the time, Nintendo held a 72% stake in the company, while Sora Ltd. held a 28% stake.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, it was disclosed that Sakurai and Project Sora were working on a version of Kid Icarus: Uprising on the Nintendo 3DS. On June 30, 2012, the Project Sora office was shut down, bringing an end to its work. Nintendo made the announcement at E3 2011 that Sakurai was working on Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. After the release of Kid Icarus: Uprising in March 2012, Sakurai started working on the game, which would later bear his name.

In February 2013, a doctor determined that Sakurai had calcific tendinitis near his right shoulder. This condition caused him significant discomfort whenever he moved his arm. He tested several of his games personally, therefore he mentioned that this may potentially slow down his work significantly. He undertakes part of his own game testing. Michiko, Sakurai’s wife, has contributed to the creation of the graphical user interface for a number of her husband’s video games, including the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby Air Ride, and Meteos.

In a column he wrote for Weekly Famitsu in January 2015, Sakurai made a passing reference to the prospect of retiring. He stated that he did not believe he would be able to keep working in the video game industry if the pressures associated with it remained the same. Sakurai remarked once more in December 2015 that he was unsure if there will be another game in the Smash Bros. series. prior to the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018 with Sakurai once again serving as director. On March 14, 2022, Sakurai was honored by Weekly Famitsu with the title of Best Creator. Sakurai has also disclosed that he is engaged in the production of a new endeavor that is not connected to the development of video games.
