Mary Teresa Barra is a successful American entrepreneur who was born on December 24, 1961. Since January 15, 2014, she has served as the chair and chief executive officer (CEO) of General Motors. Her appointment as CEO of a ‘Big Three’ automobile manufacturer makes her the first woman to hold such a position. In December 2013, General Motors announced that she would replace Daniel Akerson as CEO.
In the years leading up to his appointment as CEO, Barra served as the executive vice president of global product development, purchasing, and supply chain. Barra acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the General Motors Institute, which is now known as Kettering University. In 1980, when Barra was 18 years old, she began working at General Motors as a student who was participating in a co-op program. It was via her profession that she was able to pay for her college education. Her job included evaluating hoods and checking fender panels. After that, she worked in several different technical and administrative jobs, including overseeing the assembly facility in Detroit/Hamtramck.
Her promotion to the position of vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering took place in February of 2008. The promotion that brought her to the position of vice president of global human resources occurred in July 2009. She remained in that role until February 2011 when she was promoted to the post of executive vice president of global product development. In the latter post, she was responsible for design, and she tried to limit the number of automotive platforms that General Motors had available.
The duty that she had previously had as vice president was expanded to cover global purchasing and supply chain in August of 2013.
In January 2014, when Barra became the chief executive officer of General Motors, she made history by being the first woman to ever hold the position of CEO of an automotive corporation. In the first year that she served as CEO of General Motors, the company filed 84 safety recalls that affected more than 30 million vehicles.
A hearing was held in front of the Senate to hear testimony from Barra on the recalls and fatalities that were related to the defective ignition switch. There was also a suspicion that Barra and General Motors paid prizes to improve the image of the CEO and the firm within the specified period. The recalls resulted in the establishment of new procedures that encourage employees to report any concerns they come across to alter the culture of the organization.
During his tenure as CEO, Barra oversaw General Motors’ expansion into autonomous and electric vehicles using acquisitions, one of which was Strobe, a startup company specializing in driverless technology. In 2017, Barra was the executive with the highest overall compensation among the Detroit Three, receiving a total of $21.96 million in compensation.[[At the end of November 2018, Barra made the announcement that it would be closing five facilities in North America and laying off 14,000 employees.
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, voiced his disapproval of her action and immediately threatened to take away the government subsidies that the corporation received. Barra said that the firm has a “clear priority” to “accelerate our EV plans” and to entirely sell electric vehicles by the year 2035 in answer to a shareholder inquiry during June 2022 about the reinstatement of dividends at General Motors.
A member of the board of directors of General Dynamics, Barra served in that capacity. She is a member of the board of directors for both the Detroit Country Day School and the Detroit Economic Club. In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees of Duke University, she is also a member of the Board of Trustees at Stanford University and the Advisory Council at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Both Fortune’s List of the Most Powerful Women of 2017 and Forbes World’s List of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World for the same year ranked her as the most powerful woman in the world. In April 2014, Barra was included on the cover of Time magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.”
In December 2016, Barra participated in a corporate roundtable that was organized by Donald Trump, who was the President-elect at the time, to provide strategic and policy guidance on several economic matters. Nevertheless, she resigned from the forum in 2017, after Trump’s reaction to the demonstrations that took place in Charlottesville.
Barra was presented with a Larry Foster Award for Integrity in Public Communication at the Arthur W. Page Center Awards in 2023. This award was presented to her in recognition of her achievements. The National Academy of Engineering decided to induct Barra into its ranks in February 2018. Barra was presented with the Legend in Leadership Award by the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute in September 2018.
Forbes has chosen Barra to be a part of the first 2021 edition of the Forbes 50 Over 50, which is comprised of businesspeople, leaders, scientists, and inventors who are over the age of 50. Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most important persons in the world, the Time 100, put her on the list in the year 2021.
