Mary Badham is an American actress who was born on October 7, 1952. She is most known for her portrayal of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in the film adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), for which she received a nomination for an Academy Award in the category of Most Supporting Actress. Badham, who was only 10 years old at the time, held the record as the youngest actress to ever be considered for this award.
Before being cast in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Mary Badham had no prior experience working in the film industry. Another child actress, Patty Duke, who appeared in The Miracle Worker, was the recipient of the Oscar in her category. During production, Badham developed an especially close relationship with actor Gregory Peck, who played Atticus Finch, Scout’s father. She remained in contact with Peck, always referring to him as “Atticus,” until his passing in 2003. Peck referred to her as “Scout” in exchange.
The final episode of the original Twilight Zone series was titled “The Bewitchin’ Pool,” and it starred Badham in the role of Sport Sharewood. Because of certain technological difficulties, the adult voice actress June Foray was brought in to dub her dialogue for the portions that took place outside. Before she called it quits in the acting business, she had roles in the films This Property Is Condemned and Let’s Kill Uncle.
Cameron Watson, an actor, writer, and director, persuaded Badham to come out of retirement in 2005 so that he could play an eccentric cameo role opposite Keith Carradine in the movie Our Very Own, which Watson had directed. Watson made it clear that he would not consider casting any other actress in the role. He was able to get in touch with her in Monroeville, Alabama, where she was staying because she had been invited to watch a play adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
On March 27, 2022, Badham made her debut on tour as a stage actor playing the role of Mrs. Dubose in the U.S. national tour of Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird. The play was adapted for the stage by Stephen Sachs. John Badham is Badham’s older brother, and Badham is the director’s younger sister. Badham was working as an art restorer and a college testing coordinator as of the year 2014. She is the mother of two children and has been married to Richard W. Wilt, who is the dean of Library and Educational Support Services at Lehigh Carbon Community College.
She has gone around the world speaking about her experiences filming the film “To Kill a Mockingbird,” while also elaborating on the values of tolerance and compassion that the book conveys. To commemorate the film’s 50th anniversary of its initial theatrical release in 2012, she went to the White House to watch a screening of To Kill a Mockingbird alongside President Barack Obama. She backed the publication of the first draft of Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee in 2015, despite the book’s depiction of an older, more racist, more prejudiced character.
The lawyer Atticus Finch. She is noted for her roles in the films To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Let’s Kill Uncle (1966), and The Twilight Zone (1959), among others. Since 1975, she has been Richard Wilt’s wife. Their wedding took place. They are parents to two little ones. The actress rose to prominence after portraying the title character, Scout Finch, in the film adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. For her performance, she was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress, making her the youngest actress to ever be considered for a nomination in this category at the age of 10.
Before taking on the role of Scout Finch, she had no previous acting experience. Willie Starr, the character she played in the film This Property Is Condemned, was the only other part she had in a movie before it was released in 1966. Her older brother’s name is John Badham, and he’s a filmmaker. She remained close friends with her co-star from the film To Kill a Mockingbird all the way up to Gregory Peck’s passing, and she often referred to him as Atticus, the character that he portrayed in the movie.
Ms. Badham was selected to play the character of “Scout” in the feature film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Gregory Peck, when she was only 10 years old. As a result of her performance, she was nominated for an Academy Award. She was the youngest individual who had ever been considered for a supporting part nomination at the time.
Since then, she has traveled all across the United States to spread the message that the book and film convey about social injustice (including for the National Endowment for the Arts and at two appearances at the White House), and she was awarded a US Speaker and Specialist Grant so that she could take part in programs on To Kill a Mockingbird that was held in Russia. Other films: “This Property Is Condemned” starring Robert Redford and Natalie Wood; “Let’s Kill Uncle” starring Allison Janney; and “Our Very Own” starring Robert Redford. Television shows such as “Dr. Kildare” and “The Twilight Zone”
