Martin Scorsese Bio

Martin Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942. Both Charles and Catherine Scorsese had Sicilian ancestry, and he was the younger of their two boys. Both his mother and father worked in the garment industry. Scorsese’s childhood asthma prevented him from participating in group activities, thus he spent a lot of time alone. He spent his time watching movies with his father at home or at the theater, while his healthy buddies performed sports and talked with others.

Scorsese found the excitement and suspense he craved in the movies after being denied them in real life. He has been an expert on old Hollywood pictures from the ’40s and ’50s since a young age. He enrolled in what is now NYU’s College of Arts and Science but was then known as Washington Square College. He began winning accolades for his directing work while still in school.

This picture served as his introduction to the Hollywood scene and aided him in developing his craft. With his next film, 1973’s “Mean Streets,” about an Italian American teenager struggling to make ends meet, Scorsese firmly established his trademark blend of machismo, violence, fast-paced action, and redemption.

Films like “Italian American,” a 1974 documentary about his parents, and “American Boy,” a 1978 documentary about a friend who was deeply embedded in the drug culture of the 1960s, also premiered during this era. With the 1975 film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” he departed from his usual subject matter by following a mother who relocates to Arizona after the death of her husband. Shortly after that, in 1976, Scorsese released “Taxi Driver,” his first commercially successful film. The film “Taxi Driver” was awarded the top prize at the International Film Festival of Cannes. “The Color of Money,” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Paul Newman, was a smashing success upon its 1986 debut.

Before this, he hadn’t done many movies with a substantial budget. In 1988, he wrote a follow-up book called “The Last Temptation of Christ,” which further explored an alternate understanding of Jesus’ acceptance of his mission on earth and angered a number of religious groups. Scorsese moved back to his cinematic comfort zone with “Goodfellas,” a savage picture of the Mafia in New York City. Awards for Best Director were given by the New York Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics, and the National Society of Film Critics.

Scorsese has directed 20 narrative pictures and documentaries over the course of four decades. Since the premiere of his first film in 1968, he has also penned numerous screenplays. His artistic work is informed by his identities as a devout Catholic and an Italian American. Because of his vast understanding of human nature, the director was able to employ that knowledge to create some of cinema’s most memorable characters, which ultimately led to his success.

Scorsese wed Laraine Marie Brennan in 1965, and the couple was together for a total of six years. Catherine, the name they gave their son, is a tribute to his mum. Scorsese wed writer Julia Cameron in 1976; she was his second wife. Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, the couple’s daughter, made a cameo appearance in “The Age of Innocence.” The couple were only married for a year. Their bitter breakup served as inspiration for Cameron’s first film, the dark comedy “God’s Will,” in which the couple’s child played a central role. Their daughters have gone on to successful careers in the arts since then.

In 1979, Scorsese wed actress Isabella Rossellini, and the union lasted for only four years. Scorsese divorced his fourth wife, film producer Barbara De Fina, in 1991. After his fourth divorce, in 1997, Scorsese began dating Illeana Douglas. Scorsese has been married to Helen Schermerhorn Morris, his wife of over 20 years, since 1999. Francesca is a filmmaker and actor who has worked with her parents on films like “The Departed,” “Hugo,” and “The Aviator.”

Edith Wharton’s novel Age of Innocence, which is set in New York City in the 1890s, was adapted by Martin Scorsese, and it caused quite a stir when it was released. Scorsese remarked on the film’s writing, “I had the script in my mind for two years and wrote it in two and a half weeks,” in an interview from 1993. Production-wise and rhythmically, it was unlike anything Scorsese had directed previously. However, with his 1995 film Casino, Scorsese returned to the present day with a story of avarice and deceit in Sin City. Kundun, directed by Scorsese and based on the life of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of exiled Tibet, was released in September 1997.

In 1990, Scorsese became president of the Film Foundation, an institution devoted to preserving film history. He has also been highly supportive of underground filmmaking. In 1994, I became a member of the board of advisors for the Independent Film Channel on cable television. The American Film Institute honored Scorsese with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. He earned the Wexner Prize for inventiveness in the arts that same year. In 2001, Scorsese became the first person to be awarded the Prize for Preservation by the International Federation of Film Archives for his efforts to preserve cinematic treasures.

Scorsese has directed twenty features and documentaries over the course of four decades. He has written numerous screenplays since the release of his debut film in 1968. Much of his writing is influenced by his background as an Italian American Catholic. The director’s success can be traced back to his perceptive understanding of human nature and his use of that knowledge to create some of cinema’s most memorable characters.

Both of his parents were born to parents who had emigrated from Sicily. Characters that would later emerge in his films often had their origins in his upbringing. He attended film school at New York University, where his debut feature, Who’s That Knocking at My Door? was developed under the tutelage of the difficult yet inspiring professor Haig Manoogian. He originally saw the films of European art filmmakers like the French New Wave, Antonioni, and Fellini as a child, but it wasn’t until he was an undergraduate at NYU that he developed a serious appreciation for them. Short films he directed started earning him recognition as well.
