Mark Andrew Wood, born in England on 11 January 1990, is a cricketer representing England in all international competitions across all formats. In the English domestic cricket competition, he plays for Durham. In the Indian Premier League, he has previously represented Chennai Super Kings and now plays for Lucknow Super Giants (in the current season).
2015 was the year that Wood played in his first-ever test match, one-day international, and twenty-20 international. He was a member of the England team that triumphed in the Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the Twenty20 World Cup in 2022. Wood is a right-handed fast bowler who has maintained an average Test speed of 89 miles per hour since 2020. He is now considered one of the world’s quickest bowlers.
His first game for Durham was a first-class contest against Durham MCCU in 2011. Also, it was the year he made his professional debut. After this, he appeared in a List A match in the 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40, played against Northamptonshire. Since then, he has played another first-class game against Sri Lanka A and another List A game against Scotland in the Clydesdale Bank 40. Both of these matches were part of the Clydesdale Bank 40.
Wood first appeared for the team during the England Lions’ trip to Sri Lanka in 2014. Later that month, he played his first Test match for England, which took place against New Zealand. In the first Test, Wood had a bowling performance of 3–93 in the first innings of New Zealand’s team. After that, he took 1–47 in their second innings, contributing to England’s victory against Australia by 124 runs and giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.
Wood’s impressive performance carried over into the next Test when he finished with bowling statistics of 2–62 in the first innings against New Zealand. He also contributed with the bat, scoring 19 runs. During the second innings of New Zealand’s game, he grabbed three wickets again, but this time it cost them 97 runs. England suffered a defeat by a score of 199 runs, which resulted in a 1-1 tie in the series.
In the third One-Day International played against New Zealand, Wood scored 1–48. In the next match, he had a bowling figure of 1–49, contributing to England’s victory by seven wickets and bringing the series score to 2–2. Even though Wood did not take a door in the last game of the series and ended with a score of 0–70, England was still victorious and won the series 3–1.
On June 23, 2015, he debuted in the Twenty20 International competition during the same series. During the inaugural Ashes Test, Wood got two wickets for 68 runs in Australia’s first innings and then two for 53 runs in Australia’s second innings, contributing to England’s victory in the match by 169 runs. In the second Test, England was defeated by Australia by a score of 405 runs, and he only managed to take one wicket during the match’s first innings. His final stats were 1–92.
Because of an injury, he could not play in the third Test, but he made a successful comeback in the fourth Test and took 1–13 in Australia’s first innings. In the second innings, he scored 3–69, including the wicket winning the match for England. This resulted in England regaining possession of the Ashes. Wood took 1–59 for England during Australia’s first innings in the last Test of the series, which England lost. On the other hand, England triumphed in the series by a score of 3–2 to reclaim the Ashes.
Even though he only took one wicket in the game, he could participate in England’s England’sEngland’s first Test against Pakistan. The game ended in a tie since England could not win because of the poor lighting conditions. He participated in the second Test, which England lost even though he played pretty well. In Pakistan’s first innings, he grabbed three wickets out of forty-nine, and then in their second innings, he took another two wickets, even though Pakistan won decisively by 178 runs.
Wood was allowed the three tests Pakistan won when Olly Stone suffered an injury. He did not allow his first two matches, both of defeats, but he was added to the squad for the third Test, which took place in Saint Lucia. Wood bowled the quickest of any bowler in the contest and, in the Windies’ first innings, got five wickets for 41 runs off 8.2 overs. This was his maiden five-wicket haul in a Test, and it helped England establish a lead of 142 runs over the West Indies on day two of the final test match.
Wood was one of 55 players selected to begin training on May 29, 2020, before international matches scheduled to resume in England after the COVID-19 epidemic. Wood’s selection came on May 29. Wood was included in England’s 30-man squad on June 17, 2020, so he could begin practicing behind closed doors in preparation for the upcoming test series against the West Indies. The selection of Wood as one of England’s thirteen-man team members for the opening Test match of the series was announced on July 4, 2020.
