Bio

Manu was born on July 28, 1977, in Bahá Blanca, Argentina. His dad ran the local basketball team, known as Bahiense del Norte. Both of his older brothers, Leandro and Sebastián, were NBA players. Leandro competed in the Argentine basketball division, while Sebastián suited up for teams in Spain. His two brothers both played prominent roles for the ‘Bahiense del Norte team. Ginóbili tagged along to several games and practices with his dad and brothers. He began following the NBA and quickly became a Michael Jordan fanatic. Oscar Sanchez and Fabiam Horvath of ‘Bahiense del Norte’ were responsible for his training.

He grew up playing the game alongside Pepe Sanchez, who would later represent Argentina on the youth national team. At the age of 18, Ginóbili made his professional basketball debut with the Argentine club Andino Sport Club. Manu Ginóbili is a retired NBA player who is most remembered for his time with the San Antonio Spurs (NBA).

He was named to the 2008 and 2011 NBA All-Star Teams and was a two-time All-Star Game participant. Ginóbili has won four NBA titles, one EuroLeague title, and an Olympic gold medal. Beginning in 2004, he competed in four Olympic Games for Argentina. He carried the Argentine flag into the 2008 Summer Olympics. Three times he represented his country at the ‘FIBA World Championship. Manu Ginóbili retired from the NBA on August 27, 2018, however, he said in his farewell statement that he would continue to help the ‘San Antonio Spurs,’ the team he played for his whole career.

Ginóbili was drafted by ‘Club Estudiantes de Baha Blanca’ after making his debut in the 1995–96 Argentine basketball league season. After graduating from high school in 1997, he headed to Europe to join the team “Viola Reggio Calabria” in Italy. In the 1999 ‘NBA’ draft, Ginóbili was a second-round pick by the ‘San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were interested in signing him, but he ended up signing with another Italian team, Virtus Segafredo Bologna, and helping them win the Italian Basketball Cup, the Italian League Championship, and the EuroLeague all in the same year.

For the upcoming 2002–03 NBA season, he has signed with the San Antonio Spurs. Ginóbili was out for a spell at the start of the season due to an injury. At the end of the year, he was recognized as the Western Conference Rookie of the Month and was selected to the All-Rookie Second Team. As the ‘Spurs’ made the ‘NBA Playoffs’ in 2003, he became a regular starter and ultimately contributed to the team’s second championship. After a stellar postseason, he was named Argentina’s sportsman of the year. He was also able to meet with Néstor Kirchner, president of Argentina at the time.

When Ginóbili was at his best in 2004, the ‘Spurs’ made the playoffs. He scored 13.0 points per game on average in the postseason while adding 3.1 dimes and 5.3 boards. In the 2003–04 NBA season, Ginóbili averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game, but his club fell in the Western Conference Semifinals to the ‘Los Angeles Lakers’ despite his stellar performance.

For the 2004-2005 season, the “San Antonio Spurs” kept Ginóbili on the roster. He started every game he was in and his club made the playoffs that year. He scored 20.80 ppg and grabbed 5.80 rpg throughout the playoffs. The Spurs eventually won their third title with his assistance. Injuries plagued him throughout the 2005–06 NBA season, preventing him from playing at his peak. Despite making a full recovery and starting to play well during the 2006 playoffs, he was unable to lead his club to another championship as they were eliminated by the “Dallas Mavericks” in the Conference Semifinals.

In order to offer the squad some much-needed depth off the bench, Ginóbili moved into the sixth-man role in the second part of the 2006–07 season. In 2007, the ‘San Antonio Spurs’ made it to the NBA playoffs and ultimately won their fourth NBA title by defeating the ‘Cleveland Cavaliers’ in the NBA Finals. In the 2007–08 season, Ginóbili posted career-highs in assists, rebounds, and points, but the Spurs still lost to the Lakers in the Conference Finals.

The following year, he was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year and to the All-NBA Third Team, but he was limited to just 44 games due to injuries. In 2009, he sat out the playoffs after his club was ousted in the first round. The “San Antonio Spurs” signed him to a $39 million extension on April 9, 2010. Ginobili was selected to play in his second career “NBA All-Star Game” at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.
Ginóbili signed a two-year contract with the ‘Spurs on July 11, 2013, and he was instrumental in leading the team to the 2014 NBA Finals. Their group won their sixth championship by beating the ‘Miami Heat’ in the finals.

Ginóbili re-signed with the Spurs on July 20, 2015. On January 14, 2016, he played in his 900th NBA game for the Spurs, a victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, on February 3, he was injured while playing against the New Orleans Pelicans and had to undergo surgery the following day. In January 2018, Ginóbili made history by becoming the first player in NBA history to score 20 or more points in multiple games as a sixth man.

He became the first player since Michael Jordan to score 15 points or more in consecutive games after turning 40. In 1998, at the “FIBA World Championship” in Athens, he made his first appearance with the national squad. He contributed to his team’s silver medal finish in the 2002 ‘FIBA World Championship,’ and his team’s gold medal victory at the 2004 ‘Athens Summer Olympics,’ their first in 16 years.
