Maïwenn Bio

Having been born on the 17th of April in the year 1976 in Les Lilas, Seine-Saint-Denis, Maïwenn Le Besco is the daughter of the talented artist Catherine Belkhodja and the linguist Patrick Le Besco. After the divorce of her parents, she said that she had been mistreated by both of her parents after their separation. She had been assaulted physically and verbally by her father when she was approximately seven or eight years old, and then by her mother when she was a teenager.

Her films “Pardonnez-moi” (2006) and “Polisse” (2011) were both somewhat influenced by this incident. In her statement, she described her mother as “a poison for me.” It was she who tainted my life. Her ancestry includes Breton, Vietnamese, French, and Algerian, and she is of mixed origin. Although her father is of mixed French and Vietnamese origin, her maternal grandpa is of Algerian descent. Her father is of mixed French and Vietnamese descent.

Indeed, she is a citizen of Algeria as well. She claimed in an interview with La Nouvelle République that she obtained Algerian nationality to respect her grandparents. This was her parents’ intention to make her forget where she came from. An incident that Maïwenn subsequently recorded in her one-woman performances, Le Pois Chiche (The Chickpea) and I’m an Actress, was that her mother encouraged her to get into the acting profession at an early age.

Maïwenn, who was a kid and later a teenager, was a prominent actress who appeared in several films. One of her most notable roles was as “Elle, as a child” in the 1983 film L’été meurtrier (One Deadly Summer), which was one of the most successful films of all time. The interruption of Maïwenn’s career occurred for several years when she tied the knot with filmmaker Luc Besson and gave birth to their daughter in the year 1993.

Besson’s Léon (1994), in which she was billed as Ouin-Ouin, was the sole film in which she featured during this period. She was merely one of the supporting characters. Moreover, she was the director of the film’s making-of. Besson’s The Fifth Element (1997), in which Maïwenn played the character of the extraterrestrial Diva Plavalaguna, is considered to be the film role that has garnered the greatest worldwide attention for her.

In the aftermath of her divorce from Besson, Maïwenn made her way back to France. Following the viewing of her stand-up comedy act in Paris by several directors, she re-entered the film industry and performed as a stand-up comedian in an autobiographical one-woman show. There were several significant films in which she featured, one of which is the horror film Haute Tension (also known as High Tension in English), in which she played the role of Cécile de France’s main antagonist.

With the release of the film in 2003, she had already made up her mind that she wanted to give directing a go. She made her debut as a director with the semi-autobiographical feature film Pardonnez-moi, which she directed in 2006. Maïwenn claims that when Besson found out that she intended to use her own money to create the film, he had a conversation with her in which he informed her, “You need to immediately stop what you’re doing.” You are so insane.

No one finances a movie with their own money. However, after seeing the movie, he expressed his regret and said that she was correct in this one instance. “Le bal des actrices” (2009, All About Actresses) was her second film, and it was in this film that she played the role of herself while she was filming a documentary. It was her third picture, the social drama Polisse (2011), which received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Picture Festival in 2011. This was the moment when she gained attention on a global scale.

Maïwenn’s preoccupation with the mise en abyme, sometimes known as the narrative inside a story, stems from her early infatuation with the camera, which she uses in all three films. It was announced that her film “Mon Roi,” which was released in 2015, would be competing for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2016. The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the release of her film, DNA, which was coming out in 2020.

Maïwenn, in the year 2022, was the director of Jeanne du Barry, a film that depicted the lives of Madame du Barry and Louis XV, portraying Johnny Depp. When Maïwenn was 12 years old, she met Luc Besson, a film director. At the time, he was 29 years old. They started dating when she was 15 years old. It was in January 1993 that she gave birth to their daughter Shanna, when she was 16 years old.

While discussing the DVD extras for the film Léon: The Professional, which was released in 1994, Maïwenn said that the film is based on her relationship with Besson. The shooting of The Fifth Element began in early 1996 when she was 20 years old. It was around this time that Besson abandoned her in favor of Milla Jovovich, who would go on to appear in the picture. With Jean-Yves Le Fur, Maïwenn gave birth to a boy named Diego in the year 2004.

A real estate entrepreneur who was a past boyfriend of Princess Stephanie of Monaco and supermodel Karen Mulder, her second ex-husband is also a real estate developer. The journalist Edwy Plenel, who claimed that Maïwenn had approached him at a café in Paris and grabbed him by the hair before spitting in his face, accused that she had assaulted him in the year 2023.

According to reports from French media outlets, the French filmmaker Maïwenn has been required to pay a fine of $435 (€400) for attacking a prominent French journalist in the week leading up to the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. During an encounter that took place in March of last year, the actress-director came into Edwy Plenel, who is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the investigative news website Mediapart. The event took place at a restaurant in Paris.

She allegedly approached Plenel as he was having lunch with his attorney, yanked his head back by his hair, and then spit in his face, according to witnesses. The personnel at the restaurant found her to be the perpetrator of the assault. Following the announcement that Maïwenn’s film Jeanne du Barry, which also featured Johnny Depp, would be the opening picture at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the news of the incident surfaced only a few days later.
