Luis Fonsi was born on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tatiana Rodriguez, his younger sister, and Jean Rodriguez, his younger brother, are also singers. He always had a deep appreciation for music and was particularly captivated by the band Menudo. The San Juan Children’s Chorus welcomed him with open arms. He was in a band named Big Guys at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida. In 1995, he received a scholarship to study vocal performance at Florida State University’s School of Music.
He decided to take advantage of the Florida State University Singers’ international performance opportunities by joining the school choir. Luis Alfonso Rodrguez López-Cepero, better known by his stage name Luis Fonsi, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter who rose to fame because of his viral hit “Despacito.” He produced several demo tapes in Miami, and soon after, Universal Music Latin offered him a recording contract. He took home four Latin Grammys for the track. He had known from an early age that he was destined for a career in music, specifically as a vocalist.
He started singing in a children’s chorus when he was very young. After that, he used a music scholarship to enroll in Florida State University’s School of Music. The university choir provided him with international performance opportunities. Unfortunately, he did not stick around to finish the program and instead dropped out to focus on his music career. His career was launched after the release of his debut album, “Comenzaré” (I Shall Begin). Although many more albums followed, in 2017 his single “Despacito” exploded onto the international scene, topping the charts in over 50 countries and enjoying an unprecedented run on the US Top 40. There was a time when this video and its accompanying song were YouTube’s most popular ever, with five billion views by May 2018.
Released in 1998, “Comenzaré” became Luis Fonsi’s first album and an instant success in Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America. Singles like “Perdóname,” “Si T Quisieras,” “Dime Como,” and “Me Iré” were featured on the album. His second studio album, titled “Eterno,” was released on June 20, 2000, and was just as successful. It reached #6 on the chart of Top Hispanic Albums on Billboard. In the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, its track “Imaginame Sin Ti” reached the top spot.
In 2000, Fonsi composed a song for Puerto Rican singer Ednita Nazario that went on to win a Latin Grammy Award and was performed by Fonsi and Pope John Paul II at the Great Jubilee Concert for a Debt-Free World on May 1. His third studio album, titled “Amor Secreto,” was released by Universal Music Latino on March 12, 2002. Both his first English album, ‘Fight the Feeling,’ and his first effort at a crossover, with the single ‘Secret,’ were released in the same year. He also served as the opening act for Britney Spears’ North American and Mexican Dream Within a Dream Tour shows that same year.
On October 28, 2003, he released “Abrazar la Vida,” his fifth studio album. The RIAA certified the album platinum, and it reached #3 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. At the same time, he gave a performance at Miss World 2003, held in China and seen by millions of people throughout the world. As featured on Emma Bunton of the British girl group Spice Girls’ 2004 album “Free Me,” he recorded the song “Amazing” alongside Bunton. His appearance in the Mexican television drama series “Corazones al lite” occurred the same year. His 2005 album “Paso a Paso” was released. After selling over 200,000 copies in the US, it was given the Disco De Platino certification. The album’s lead track, “Nada Es Para Siempre,” hit number one and was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
His 2017 breakthrough came after he collaborated with Daddy Yankee on the hit tune “Despacito.” The original release of the track was solely in Spanish, and it became a smash in areas where Spanish is spoken. Canadian artist Justin Bieber did a bilingual English remix of the song in April 2017. After the remix was released, the song shot up the charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and many other countries. It eventually topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for the week it was released. It also marked Fonsi’s first chart-topping single. For 16 weeks, the song was at the top of the charts.
His latest single, “Échame la Culpa,” was published in November 2017 and debuted at number three on the Hot Latin chart, while Fonsi’s album “Comenzaré” reached number twenty-seven on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. The RIAA recognized its sales of 100,000 copies as platinum. Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, and Venezuela all saw brisk sales of the record. His album Amor Secreto reached number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, and its lead track “Quisiera Poder Olvidarme De T” also topped that chart. RIAA also certified the single platinum in Latin.
His Spanish-language track “Despacito” was an enormous success. As of May 2018, its YouTube video had amassed five billion views. The video quickly surpassed all others in terms of views and played on virtually every Latin Billboard chart. In 2003, Luis Fonsi developed feelings for the Puerto Rican actress Adamari López. After learning of López’s cancer diagnosis in 2005, he abruptly canceled the remainder of his international tour. He accompanied her on trips to Mexico, Miami, and Puerto Rico for medical care and professional obligations.
There were rumors that Fonsi was dating the Spanish model guide López. In December 2011, they welcomed a daughter, Mikaela. They were dating for three years before getting engaged on September 10, 2014, and their son Rocco was born on December 20, 2016.
