Lindsay Wagner Bio

Lindsay Jean Wagner is a well-known American film and television actress, model, author, singer, and acting coach. She was born on June 22, 1949, in the United States. Jaime Sommers, the character that Wagner played in the American science fiction television series The Bionic Woman (1976–1978), for which she is most known, was Wagner’s breakthrough role in the entertainment industry. She made her debut in the part in the television show titled “The Six Million Dollar Man.” The character rose to prominence as a symbol of 1970s popular culture.

In 1977, Wagner received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Dramatic Role for her performance in this role; it was the first time the award had been given to an actor or actress in a science fiction series. Wagner began his career as a professional actor in 1971 and has continued to act professionally ever since, appearing in a wide variety of film and television productions up until the current day.

Wagner was the daughter of Marilyn Louise (née Thrasher) and William Nowels Wagner. She was born in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. After Wagner’s parents split up when she was seven years old, her mother relocated the family to the Eagle Rock neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles, which is located close to Pasadena. A subsequent move moved Wagner, along with her mother and stepfather Ted Ball, to the city of Portland, Oregon. There, she enrolled in David Douglas High School and participated in a variety of school productions throughout her time there.

After receiving his diploma, Wagner traveled throughout France for a few months before beginning his studies at the University of Oregon for the next academic year. Following that, Wagner enrolled at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham for half a year before deciding to withdraw from school and relocate to Los Angeles. Dyslexia was determined to be her affliction. Wagner worked as a model in Los Angeles and earned some experience on television by acting as a hostess in Playboy After Dark.

In 1969, she also competed as a contestant on the game show The Dating Game; among her potential suitors was TV actor Roger Ewing, but she did not choose him. She became a contract player at Universal Studios after signing a deal with the company in 1971 and working in various Universal productions. Her first appearance on a primetime network television show was in the episode “Million Dollar Buff” of the series Adam-12. After that, she went on to star in a dozen other Universal television episodes, such as Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law, The F.B.I., Sarge, and Night Gallery (1971, as the nurse in the episode “The Diary”).

She made her debut on the small screen in two episodes of The Rockford Files and five episodes of Universal’s Marcus Welby, M.D. between the years 1971 and 1975. The year 1973 marked the beginning of Ms. Wagner’s career in the motion picture industry. Universal cast her in the film Two People, which was both her first feature film and her first leading part. She also had a co-starring role in the film The Paper Chase, which was released by 20th Century Fox in the same year, in which she played the daughter of a strict law professor named Kingsfield.

In 1975, Wagner performed the character of Jaime Sommers, a former tennis player who was the childhood sweetheart of “Six Million Dollar Man” Colonel Steve Austin (played by Lee Majors). This role was arranged under her extended contract with Universal Studios. According to Kenneth Johnson, who was interviewed for a featurette that was included in the 2010 North American DVD release of The Bionic Woman season one, Wagner was cast in the role based upon her appeal and spontaneity after he saw her presence in the pilot and a follow-up episode of The Rockford Files.

The featurette was included in the DVD release of the first season of The Bionic Woman. In the two-part episode of the second season, her character suffers severe injuries in a skydiving accident and is later fitted with bionic implants identical to Austin’s; however, her body rejects the implants, which ultimately leads to her passing away. This was supposed to be Wagner’s final role while she was under contract with Universal, but the public reaction to the character was so overwhelming that the “death” was retconned into a cover story for a near-death secret recovery, and Wagner appeared in a two-part episode which returned her character, followed by a spin-off series, The Bionic Woman, which debuted in January 1976.

Originally, this was supposed to be Wagner’s final role under her Universal contract. In the same year, she appeared in the Canadian movie Second Wind alongside James Naughton in the role of the male lead. Throughout the course of The Six Million Dollar Man’s run, she guest starred in several different episodes as characters from other shows. Wagner was awarded the Emmy in 1977 for “Best Actress in a Dramatic Role” for her performance as the character.

After The Bionic Woman was canceled in 1978, Wagner maintained his acting career, focusing primarily on roles in television miniseries and films made specifically for television. These included the 1980 miniseries Scruples, which received very positive reviews, as well as the three made-for-television Bionic reunion movies that starred Lee Majors and were broadcast between 1987 and 1994.

In the 1980s as well, Wagner played the role of Sylvester Stallone’s ex-wife in the movie Nighthawks, which was released in 1981. She also had starring roles in two further weekly television programs, Jessie (1984) and A Peaceable Kingdom (1989), although both of these shows were canceled after a brief run. In 1983, she also made a guest appearance in an episode of the television series The Fall Guy, which was created by Lee Majors.

Wagner continued to act throughout the 1990s and the 2000s, albeit in roles that were not as notable as his earlier work, such as a bit part in the 1991 action film Ricochet. Her most recent works include the television film Thicker than Water, which she co-starred in with Melissa Gilbert in 2005, Buckaroo: The Movie, which she also directed in 2005, and Four Extraordinary Women, which she directed in 2006. Wagner began a recurring role as Dr. Vanessa Calder in the blockbuster drama Warehouse 13 on the SyFy channel in 2010.

The following year, in 2011, she reprised her role as Dr. Vanessa Calder in the sister show Alphas on the SyFy channel. As an adjunct faculty member, Wagner began teaching at San Bernardino Valley College in southern California in the autumn semester of 2013. The classes that he was responsible for teaching were “Motion Picture Production” and “Acting and Directing for Television and Film.” In the episode “Blood Brothers” from the thirteenth season of NCIS that aired in 2015, Wagner played the part of Barbara Bishop, who was the mother of NCIS Probationary Agent Eleanor Bishop, who was played by Emily Wickersham.
