Linda Maria Ronstadt is a retired American singer who has worked and recorded in a variety of musical styles, including rock, country, light opera, the Great American Songbook, and Latin. She was born on July 15, 1946. 11 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award have all been bestowed to her. Many of her albums have received gold, platinum, or multi-platinum certification both domestically and abroad. Additionally, she has been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Tony Award. She received the Latin Recording Academy’s Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and the Recording Academy’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In April 2014, she was admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She received the National Medal of Arts and Humanities on July 28, 2014.
She shared a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019 alongside Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for their work as the trio Trio. Ronstadt was one of five recipients of the 2019 Kennedy Center Honors for their lifetime contributions to the arts. Ronstadt became the first female “arena class” rock artist with the publication of many albums that reached the top of the charts, including Heart Like a Wheel, Simple Dreams, and Living in the USA. She broke records as one of the decade’s highest-earning concert performers. Ronstadt was chosen as the Top Female Pop Singer of the 1970s and is known as the “First Lady of Rock” and the “Queen of Rock.” She appeared on the covers of Newsweek, Time, and Rolling Stone six times total. Her rock-and-roll persona was as well-known as her music.
In the 1980s, Ronstadt worked with conductor Nelson Riddle, recorded traditional music, appeared on Broadway and garnered a Tony nomination for her performance in The Pirates of Penzance. At the time, this was seen as a unique and unconventional decision for a rock & roll musician. With multi-platinum-selling albums like Mad Love, What’s New, Canciones de Mi Padre, and Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, this endeavour was successful, and Ronstadt remained one of the music industry’s best-selling artists throughout the 1980s. Until her retirement in 2011, she continued on touring, working with other artists, and recording acclaimed albums like Winter Light and Hummin’ to Myself.
Numerous Ronstadt albums have received gold, platinum, or multi-platinum certifications. Ronstadt was the most popular female singer of the 1970s and one of the most successful female recording artists in American history. She sold over 100 million albums worldwide and broke records as one of the top-grossing concert performers for over a decade. She championed composers and artists, ushered her chart success into the concert circuit, and was at the forefront of numerous musical movements, opening many doors for women in rock and roll and other musical genres.
Linda Ronstadt is a prolific musician with an impressive discography of 24 studio albums and 15 compilation or greatest hits albums. Her success on the US Billboard Hot 100 list is also noteworthy, with 38 hits to her name. Of these hits, 21 made it to the top 40, 10 made it to the top 10, and one reached the coveted number one spot. Ronstadt’s popularity was not limited to the United States, as her music also charted in the UK. Her song “Blue Bayou” peaked at number 35 on the UK charts, and two of her duets, “Somewhere Out There” with James Ingram and “Don’t Know Much” with Aaron Neville, peaked at numbers 8 and 2, respectively. Ronstadt’s success on the US Billboard Pop Album Chart is equally impressive, with 36 albums in the top 100, 10 in the top 10, and three at number one.
Linda Ronstadt was born on July 15, 1946, in Tucson, Arizona, to Gilbert Ronstadt and Ruth Mary Ronstadt. Gilbert was of Mexican origin with a German male ancestor and came from a long line of Arizona ranchers. He was also a successful equipment dealer and owner of the F. Ronstadt Co. Linda was the third of his four children, and her upbringing in Arizona likely influenced her musical style and repertoire, which often included elements of country, rock, and folk music.
The University of Arizona library has information on the family’s impact on and contributions to Arizona’s history, including waggon building, trade, pharmacy, and music. Her great-grandfather, the engineer Friedrich August Ronstadt, emigrated from Hanover, Germany, in the 1840s, first to Sonora, Mexico, and subsequently to the Southwest. He subsequently made Tucson his home after getting married to a Mexican citizen. The City of Tucson dedicated its central transit terminal to Linda’s grandfather, Federico José Mara Ronstadt, a local pioneer businessman, on March 16, 1991. Federico José Mara Ronstadt was a waggon maker who made an early contribution to the city’s mobility by delivering six mule-drawn streetcars in 1903–04.
Ruth Mary, the mother of Ronstadt, was reared in Flint, Michigan; she is of German, English, and Dutch descent. An early version of the electric toaster, several refrigerator gadgets, the grease gun, the first electric stove, and an early version of the microwave oven were all created by Ruth Mary Copeman’s father, Lloyd Groff Copeman, a prolific inventor with close to 700 patents. He received royalties from his flexible rubber ice cube tray for millions of dollars.
With her brothers Peter, Michael, and Gretchen, Ronstadt was reared on the family’s 10-acre ranch. In 1953, Family Circle magazine profiled the family. Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Billy Eckstine,Frank Zappa, Carla Bley, Rosemary Clooney, Flaco Jiménez, Philip Glass, Warren Zevon, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Earl Scruggs, Johnny Cash, and Nelson Riddle are just a few of the artists with whom Ronstadt has worked. One of the best-selling performers in history, she has contributed her voice to over 120 albums and sold over 100 million copies. Ronstadt is “gifted with possibly the most brilliant pair of pipes of her time,” Jazz Times’ Christopher Loudon noted in 2004.
After noticing a decline in her singing voice in 2000, Ronstadt limited her output. Her last full-length album was released in 2004 and she gave her final live performance in 2009. In 2011, she announced her retirement, and soon after, she disclosed that a degenerative ailment ultimately identified as progressive supranuclear palsy is why she can no longer sing. Ronstadt has kept up her public appearances, touring extensively in the 2010s to give speeches. Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir, her autobiography, was released in September 2013. Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, a documentary based on her autobiography, was published in 2019.
