Liane Moriarty Bio

Liane Moriarty was born in Sydney, Australia on a lovely November day in 1966. Considering that most newborns can’t even focus their eyes, it’s incredible that she smiled at her dad through the glass nursery window just a few hours after she was born.

“Glug” was her very first word. Her mother kept a baby diary in which she meticulously detailed these events.  Her reading obsession drove her schoolmates to mercilessly hide their books from her when she came to play. She still can’t wind down at night until she’s had a long, hot bath and read a good book.

While she has no recollection of her first story, she does recall her first publishing contract. Her dad ‘commissioned’ her to write a book and gave her a buck to get started. Author of the three-volume epic “The Mystery of Dead Man’s Island.”

Liane pursued a profession in marketing and advertising after finishing her education. For a while, she adopted a very businesslike wardrobe and preoccupied herself with such trivia as the square footage of her office. She left her job as marketing manager at a legal publishing company to start her own business, The Little Ad Agency, which was not particularly successful. After that, she became a (much happier) freelance advertising copywriter, penning anything from website copy to TV commercial scripts to the back of a box of Sultana Bran.

She also penned numerous unfinished novellas and short stories. The issue, though, was that she didn’t think it was possible for real people to have their works published. Jaclyn Moriarty, her younger sister, called one day to tell her that their novel Feeling Sorry for Celia was about to be published, and suddenly she knew that they did.

After a heated argument with her brother, Liane sat down at the computer and created a children’s book titled “The Animal Olympics,” which was promptly and enthusiastically rejected by every publisher in Australia. She eventually collected herself enough to start graduate school at Macquarie University in Sydney. In pursuit of that diploma, she penned her debut novel, titled “Three Wishes.” Pan Macmillan approved it, and it was eventually published in many languages and in many countries. Both Amy Einhorn Books and Penguin are wonderful to work with, and they publish her most recent works.

She has now published four more novels for adults and several books for younger readers. Released in the United States in August 2013, Liane’s fifth novel “The Husband’s Secret” quickly rose to the top of the New York Times Bestsellers list. Both “Free-falling” and “Paper Chains,” books written by Liane’s younger sister Nicola Moriarty and published by Random House, are highly regarded works of fiction.

She has two young children with her husband in Sydney, and they are fond of climbing all over her while she is writing, bashing their fists against the keyboard, and kindly recommending that she watch the Wiggles instead. While she has no recollection of her first story, she does recall her first publishing contract. Her father ‘commissioned’ her to write a novel for him and paid her a dollar in advance. She hadn’t found representation yet, so she took his first offer and penned the three-volume epic The Mystery of Dead Man’s Island.

Liane pursued a career in marketing and advertising after finishing her education. She was doing extremely well academically until the final semester when she took a course that ‘tied together’ all the concepts she had studied throughout her degree. She almost made it.

She started dressing very businesslike and fretting over how much space she needed in her workplace. She finally quit her job as manager of marketing to start her own advertising agency, which she dubbed The Little Ad Agency. Later, she became a more successful freelance advertising copywriter, penning everything from website copy and TV commercial scripts to the back of the Sultana Bran box. She spent her spare time writing short stories and several unfinished novels beginnings.

The issue, though, was that she didn’t think it was possible for real people to have their works published. Then one day, her younger sister Jaclyn Moriarty called to announce that her first brilliant young adult novel was about to be published, and she realized that they did. Liane sat down at the computer in a fit of sibling jealousy and promptly had it rejected with gusto by every publisher in Australia.

She eventually collected herself enough to start graduate school at Macquarie University in Sydney. She completed her first novel, Three Wishes, for her degree. Because of her sister Jaci, she got her start in publishing. The Husband’s Secret, Liane’s fifth novel, was published in the United States in August 2013 and quickly became a #1 New York Times Bestseller. The champagne flowed freely. For nearly a year, it was a New York Times bestseller, and just recently, it was chosen as one of the best books of the last decade by the prestigious Richard and Judy Book Club in the United Kingdom.
