Chinese actor and filmmaker Li Chen (Jerry Li) is a household name in the West. On November 24, 1978, in Beijing, China, his mother conceived him. Both Ultimate Rescue and Aftershock brought him fame, with the former earning him a China Movie Channel Media Award. For his first feature film, Li took the director’s chair in 2017 for Sky Hunter. As of 2017, Li ranked 55th on Forbes’ China Celebrity 100 list, up from 35th in 2013 and 83rd the year before.
In his first acting role, Li played a young, active, and untainted youngster in the TV series Seventeen Year-Olds Don’t Cry, which aired in 1997. I was cast as Qi Beile in the thirteenth Princess, a castle-feeling drama, and began to regain popularity. Although the adaptation was not a major success, Li was noted for his performance and subsequently cast in a few works as a result. Returning to prominence in 2006 with his work in the show Soldiers Sortie, he was officially added to Huayi Brothers at that point. Assemblage, directed by Feng Xiaogang, featured Li shortly after.
Aside from his Best Actor nod at the International Emmys, Li also took home the Best Newcomer prize at the China Movie Channel Media Awards. After joining the cast of the critically acclaimed Chinese variety show Keep Running in 2014, Li quickly became a household figure in the country.
After that, Li was a co-star in the war drama The Good Fellas, for which he also serves as the maker cum official maker. The arrangement was originally recorded in 2013, however, it was not made available to the public until 2016. The Good Fellas, thanks in large part to Li’s efforts, was awarded the prize for Best Television Series at the Shanghai Television Festival. Li played Cao Pi in the 2017 season of The Advisors Alliance, which is based on real events. His first film as director, Sky Hunter, is the first Chinese aerial combat film, and it was released that year. I was thrust into the action drama Seven Days in 2018.
He is a well-known Chinese actor who has won Golden Rooster honors for his roles as Liu in Assembly and Fang Da in Aftershock. In 1997, he first gained widespread recognition for his performance as Jian Ning in a film. In 2015, he worked on several projects at once, including The Empress of China, Running Man, Let’s Get Married, and Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe.
At the tender age of seven or eight, Li Chen took a keen interest in art and enjoyed playing with a paintbrush. He used to spend a lot of time as a kid lazing around on rocks and watching the clouds as they drifted across the sky. In the evenings, he would use a flashlight to cast shadows of his hand against the wall, mesmerized by the kaleidoscope of shapes he could make against the mottled background of old houses.
Li’s favorite subject in school was art since it gave him the freedom to let his mind wander and allowed him to ignore his parents’ rules. I studied arts and crafts at National Dajia Industrial Senior High School and was influenced by prominent modern Taiwanese artists including Chen Hsin-wan, Cheng Chiung-ming, Lee Chin-hsiu, and Huang Pu-ching during his six years there. Li Chen worked in the studio of renowned local artist Hsieh Tung-Liang and studied body sculpture before he was drafted into the Taiwanese military.
Li Chen was working in his studio in 1987 when a lay Buddhist walked in and asked, “Young guy I used to paint a little myself, your realist work is really fairly good, would you like to try to construct a Buddha statue? Why don’t you try your hand at constructing a Buddhist shrine? Li gave his immediate assent. He learned only long later that sculpting Buddha was much more difficult than sculpting a human being. His reaction was to devote himself completely to learning about Buddhist art and the canonical texts.
Li Chen accepted a number of commissions, and in his spare time, he tried to pursue his own artistic interests. However, he eventually found the constraints of sculpting Buddha statues to be too stifling. I had always wanted his work to reflect the artistry that he felt was inherent in every human being, but he found that such idealism had no place in his chosen field. As a result, he no longer considers the works from this time to be his own. Therefore, Li resolved to devote his time and energy to studying. The year 1999 marked the first time he was allowed to focus solely on his artistic endeavors.
Chinese sculptor Li Chen is interested in capturing the essence of Eastern culture for Western audiences. However, the shapes used by Buddhist sculpture for a millennium offered a uniquely challenging hurdle, which Li has been able to identify and overcome. The Beauty of Emptiness and Energy of Emptiness, two of Li Chen’s earliest series, both reinterpret the semiotic image of Buddha statues through the use of basic, minimalist lines to create an aesthetic of emptiness. At the same time, the heavy and light visual tension was achieved by combining the Tao, “Qi,” and energy of Chinese philosophy with the fullness and sphericity of the sculptures.
