Bio

Leslie Uggams is an African-American legend in the entertainment industry, both as an actor and a singer. Her meteoric climb to popularity in the United States occurred at a period in which racial discrimination was a significant role. She was a trailblazer for many African-American actresses and artists that came after her in the industry. She began her career as a young performer on the television series “Beulah,” and has since gone on to have a successful career in movies, on television, and on stage.

‘Two Weeks in Another Town,’ ‘Skyjacked,’ ‘Poor Pretty Eddie,’ and ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ are among the most well-known films that Leslie Uggams has been a part of. Uggams is also well-remembered for her roles as Kizzy Reynolds in the television series “Roots” and Lilian Roger Parks in the film “Backstairs at the White House.” Both of these roles earned her critical acclaim. Her roles as Blind Al in the ‘Deadpool movie trilogy and Leah Walker in the ‘Empire’ series have given her career a new lease on life. On the stage, she has been recognized for her work in a number of productions, including “Hallelujah, Baby!,” “Blue in the Night,” “Jerry’s Girls,” and “On Golden Pond,” to mention a few.

On May 25, 1943, in Harlem, New York City, United States of America, she was born to her parents, Harold Coyden Uggams and Juanita Ernestine. She graduated from the New York Professional Children’s School after she was done with her education. After that, she continued her education at the renowned Juilliard School. While on tour in Australia, Leslie Uggams and Grahame Pratt first met and fell in love with one another. On October 16, 1965, the couple tied the knot.

After that, the interracial couple relocated to New York in order to protect themselves from the racial discrimination laws that were enforced in the United States. The couple, who are still very much in love with one another, has been blessed with two children: a girl named Danielle Chambers and a boy named Justice Pratt. Additionally, Uggams was a founder member of the organization known as ‘The BRAVO Chapter/City of Hope.’ The ‘University of Connecticut’ bestowed to her its highest distinction, a ‘Doctor of Fine Arts degree,’ in the same year (2015).

At the early age of six, Leslie Uggams made her debut in the entertainment industry as Ethel Water’s niece on the television comedy ‘Beulah’ (1951). After that, she started performing at the renowned Apollo Theatre in Harlem, where she averaged 28 appearances per week. When we met her, she was just six years old. Soon after, she made her first appearance as a singer on “The Lawrence Welk Show” (1951). After winning $12,500 on the musical game program ‘Name That Tune’ in 1958, she quickly became a well-known figure across the United States.

The single titled “Meet My Friend, Mr. Sun” was published by Leslie Uggams in the year 1955. The next step was to sign a multi-record contract with ‘Columbia Records.’ She collaborated with them on the production of 14 recordings. At the same time, in 1964, she captivated viewers with her remarkable singing abilities on television. This was featured on programs such as “Sing Along with Mitch,” which aired from 1961 to 1964, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which ran from 1964 to 1969, and “The Dean Martin Show” (1965 – 1972).

Atlantic Records was the label that offered Uggams his second big record contract. This led to the production of critically acclaimed albums such as “A House Built on Sand” (1967), “River Deep, Mountain High” (1968), and “Walk Him Up the Stairs” (1970), amongst others.
In 1967, Leslie Uggams made her debut on Broadway in the production of “Hallelujah, Baby.” She continued to enthrall audiences on Broadway with performances in productions such as “Her First Roman” (1968), “Blues in the Night” (1982), “Jerry’s Girls” (1985), and “Anything Goes” (1987).

After making her debut in the film “Two Weeks in Another Town” (1962), she went on to star in television programs such as “The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.” (1966) and “That is My Boy,” respectively (1968 – 1969). In 1969, she became the host of the very first African-American woman-hosted television series, which was titled “The Leslie Uggams Show.”

In 1972, she appeared in the films “Skyjacked” and “Black Girl,” both of which received positive reviews from film critics. In the television series ‘Roots,’ which debuted in 1977, she had a memorable performance as the character Kizzy Reynolds Moore. She then continued with “Backstairs at the White House” as her next song (1979).

Uggams was nominated for an Emmy for her depiction of the real-life Lillian Rogers, which garnered her the nomination. ‘Fantasy’ was a game show for families that Leslie Uggams hosted in 1983 and won a “Daytime Emmy” for her performance as the program host. She also became well-known for her roles in television dramas such as “The Love Boat” and “All My Children”. Sugar Hill, the sole movie she had released during that time period, was not successful at the box office.

In 2001, Leslie Uggams made her comeback to Broadway with a performance in the play “King Hedley II” for which she was nominated for a “Tony Award.” She returned to the Broadway stage for two more productions, ‘On Golden Pond’ and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. In addition to her work on Broadway, Uggams has garnered widespread critical praise for her theatrical performances in productions such as “On Golden Pond” (2005), “The First Breeze of Summer” (2008), and “Gypsy” (2014), amongst others.

Her most recent prominent roles were in the films “Deadpool” (2016) and “Deadpool 2,” both of which were released in 2016. (2018). Her portrayal of Vivian in “Nurse Jackie” (2015) and her ongoing role as series regular Leah Walker in “Empire” (2018–present) have both garnered positive reviews from television critics.
