Lawrence Francis O’Donnell Jr. is an American television anchor, actor, author, screenwriter, liberal political commentator, and host of The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, an MSNBC opinion and news program that airs on weeknights. He was born on November 7, 1951, and his full name is Lawrence Francis O’Donnell Jr. In addition to being a founder and executive producer of the NBC series Mister Sterling, he worked as a writer and producer on the NBC series The West Wing, where he played the character of President Bartlet’s father in flashbacks. In 2009, O’Donnell started appearing on Joe Scarborough’s show Morning Joe as a frequent guest contributor. His combative debate approach on that program and others led to multiple on-air confrontations, one of which was an encounter with conservative Marc Thiessen on Morning Joe that became so hot that Scarborough took O’Donnell off the air to cool things down.

She claimed that the LDS Church is an “invented religion” that was “created by a guy in upstate New York in 1830 when he got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it.” On the episode of The Last Word that aired on April 11, 2012, Rosie O’Donnell apologized for the comments she made on April 3 and stated that she understood that they had caused offense to a great number of people, including some of the show’s most devoted viewers.
