Laura Veirs was born on October 24th, 1973. Laura Veirs is a singer and songwriter who creates music that combines the ambitious melodic patterns of indie rock and the poetic sensibility of modern folk music. Her music might be described as “indie folk.” Her vocals are nuanced in their blend of sweetness and subtle bite, which is complemented by her gentle, expressive voice and guitar work that allows for acoustic simplicity as well as a more angular electric attack. Veirs’ songs are literate and emotionally intelligent, revealing even when she shows signs of caution.
It was her third album, “Troubled by the Fire,” that drew the attention of critics and discriminating listeners in 2003. This led to a major-label contract and a highly regarded second album, “Carbon Glacier,” which was released in 2004. She took a detour to work on the album Case/lang/Veirs, which was released in 2016 and featured Neko Case and k.d. lang. My Echo, which was released in 2020 and was a gently moving compilation, was recorded during the time that Veirs’ marriage to Martine was coming to an end, and Found Light, which was released in 2022, found her increasing her role as both a producer and an instrumentalist in the music industry.
Both of her parents had careers in education; her father was a professor of physics at the university level, while her mother had a career as a middle school educator. As a child, she tried her hand at piano lessons and soaked up the folk, ethnic, and classical sounds that were present in her home. She also took in the popular music that she listened to while she was out with her friends. Veirs received his education in geology and Mandarin Chinese at Carleton College, which is located in Minnesota.
She decided to join an all-female punk rock band named Rair Kx after being exposed to the experimental sounds of bands like Bikini Kill and Sonic Youth by her friends. She first became interested in music while she was a student at Carleton University. During a geology research trip to Northeast China, where she served as a translator, Veirs wrote songs on a cheap guitar to keep herself occupied and sort out her feelings. While her other students were out looking for specimens, Veirs was the one who stayed behind to serve as the translator.
She moved to Seattle after graduating from college and started playing at open-mike events there. Before long, she was asked to record a demo, which led to her being hired for a position at the Bumbershoot music festival, which takes place every year in the city. In the latter half of that year, she tracked and mixed her debut album in real time over the period of just three hours. She then independently published the album she had created.
Since the year 2000, Veirs has maintained a close working relationship with musician and record producer Tucker Martine. Martine has made contributions to every studio album that Veirs has released since. Together, they collaborated on the production of her second self-released album, which bears the title The Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae. After the record received positive reviews in the Pacific Northwest, a copy of Troubled by the Fire, which Martine had completed in 2002, was given to Simon Raymonde, the owner of the British company Bella Union Records. Martine had finished writing and recording the album in 2002.
Raymonde, who was a huge fan of the record, was the one who arranged for its release in the United Kingdom. Kill Rock Stars was the one who handled the distribution of the record in the United States. Nonesuch Records made the decision to sign Veirs after the album Troubled by the Fire received positive reviews and was successful commercially. Because her album Carbon Glacier, which came out in 2004, was one of the most critically acclaimed records of that year, the record label made the decision to sign her. After recording two more albums that received high praise from music critics for Nonesuch, Laura Veirs released July Flame under her own label, Raven Marching Band Records, in the year 2010. At that point in time, she was already married to Martine, and the couple had recently become parents to their first child.
After giving birth to her first child, Veirs found the motivation to create the album she was working on. The year 2012 marked the birth of Veirs and Martine’s second child, and parenthood served as an inspiration for the album Warp & Weft that was released the following year. The fact that well-known singers and composers Neko Case and k.d. lang were among the guest vocalists in the sessions gave the impression that the two of them had worked together with Laura Veirs.
During the same year, she introduced a podcast that she called Midnight Lightning. On it, she discussed the creative process, as well as topics such as parenting and inspiration, with other creative people and parents. In addition, she published her first book, which was titled Libba: The Magnificent Musical Life of Elizabeth Cotten. It was a history of the famous folk song that was created especially for children.
