New York City was the place of Laura Leggett Linney’s birth on February 5, 1964; her parents and grandparents were also involved in the theatre. Her father was the well-known author Romulus Linney, whose own great-grandfather served in the North Carolina congressional delegation. Her great-grandfather was also a congressman from North Carolina.
Her mother, Miriam Anderson (Leggett), holds the professional designation of a registered nurse. Despite the fact that Linney did not grow up in her father’s household, her entire life was dominated from a young age by the career that her father held (her parents split when she was an infant). She began her acting training after graduating from Brown University in 1986 and continued her education at both the Juilliard School and the Arts Theatre School in Moscow.
She went on to launch her acting career on the stages of Broadway, where she was lauded for her work in productions such as “Hedda Gabler” and “Six Degrees of Separation,” amongst others. Her initial education was finished in the institution known as Northfield Mount Hermon School, which is located in the region of New England known as Northfield. The next year, she made the decision to enroll at the prestigious Northwestern University.
After completing her studies there, she continued her education at Brown University. After that, she continued her education at the illustrious Julliard School of Acting, where she developed her skills even more. She was quite involved in a lot of plays throughout her time at the university where she studied. Beginning in the early 1990s, Linney had cameo roles in films like Lorenzo’s Oil (1992) and Dave, among others, as he launched his career in the film industry. Her first acting job was as Mary Anne Singleton, which she played in the PBS film adaptations of Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City” series.
She appeared in Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, and Further Tales of the City. Her breakthrough performance in Primal Fear (1996), in which she played the ex-girlfriend of Richard Gere’s character, garnered her widespread recognition from film critics and opened the door to a variety of new career chances.
This was Linney’s first substantial role on the big screen. Following her performance in Clint Eastwood’s film Absolute Power (1997) as the character of Eastwood’s daughter, Laura Linney went on to have a second leading part in the film The Truman Show the following year. Even though Linney had always been a gifted performer, she didn’t come into her own as an actress until after the year 2000. She kicked off the new decade with a performance in the movie You Can Count On Me that was unanimously praised and, to some extent, perfect.
She was given a nomination for an Academy Award as a direct result of her performance in this, her first main part, for which she was paid a total of $10,000. Linney’s performance as Sammy, a single mother whose life is complicated by the arrival in town of her wandering brother and a new boss, earned her substantial critical acclaim. Sammy’s life is further complicated by the entrance of a new boss.
After the success of this role, she went on to provide an outstanding performance in the film The House of Mirth (2000), in which she portrayed the character Bertha Dorset. This was definitely the best performance in a movie that had many other good performances. Since then, a number of challenging dramatic parts have been presented to Linney, and she has always been up to the challenge.
This can be seen in films such as Mystic River and Kinsey (2004), both of which garnered her an Academy Award nomination. Her first foray into the world of film was a cameo performance in the 1992 film Lorenzo’s Oil, which was quickly followed by a part in the 1993 comedy picture Dave (1993).
Her role in the television miniseries Tales of the City, which was adapted from a novel written by Armistead Maupin, was another one that she played in the year 1993. She was cast in the role of Mary Ann Singleton. She had her first big break in the entertainment world when she was cast with Richard Gere in the suspense film Primal Fear, which was about the assassination of an archbishop.
Richard Gere was her co-star in the film. The success that she had in the film Absolute Power, in which she played the daughter of a man (played by Clint Eastwood) who is falsely accused of a crime implicating the president, as well as in the comedy-drama The Truman Show, led to subsequent leading parts in films such as The Truman Show. Around the turn of the twenty-first century, people started paying a lot of attention to Linney’s performance for the first time.
Her performance as a single mother in the film You Can Count on Me got her a nomination for an Academy Award in the category of best actress. The prize was bestowed upon her in the same year. Her roles in the television comedy Frasier, the television movie Wild Iris (2004), and the HBO miniseries John Adams earned her nominations for Emmy Awards.
The next year, Linney was nominated for a second Academy Award, this time for the role she played as the freethinking wife of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey in the film Kinsey. Her performance earned her the nomination for the best-supporting actress. She played a skilled writer who was going through an unpleasant divorce in New York City in the 1980s when she participated in the quirky drama The Squid and the Whale. The film was released in 2005. After that, Linney appeared in the comedic film Man of the Year (2006) as well as the suspense film Breach, which was about the FBI (2007).
