Bird is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, having earned the nicknames “The Hick from French Lick” and “Larry Legend.” The bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana, to Georgia and Korean War veteran Claude Joseph “Joe” Bird.

On both sides of his family, Bird’s parents were of Irish, Scottish, and Native American ancestry. Larry grew up in nearby French Lick, where his mother worked two jobs to support him and his five siblings. Bird has stated that his childhood poverty still motivates him “to this day.” When Larry was in high school, Georgia and Joe divorced, and Joe committed suicide about a year later.

becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer. Eddie Bird, Bird’s brother, played basketball at Indiana State University. A career in college In 1974, Bird was awarded a scholarship to play college basketball for Bob Knight and the Indiana University Hoosiers. However, he was overwhelmed by the size of the campus and the number of students and was not mentally prepared for this stage of life; “it didn’t take long to realise that I was out of my cocoon,” Bird says.

The bird was also treated poorly by an established IU star, Kent Benson; however, the team’s other upperclassmen treated him well, according to Bird. After only 24 days, he dropped out of Indiana, disappointing his mother. Bird returned to French Lick and enrolled in the nearby Northwood Institute before dropping out and working for a year with the Street Department (which picked up garbage, repaired roads, removed snow, mowed lawns, and so on). He played AAU basketball for Hancock Construction and decided to attend Indiana State University in Terre Haute the following year, where he was coached by Bob King.

Before the 1978–79 season, King suffered a stroke, and assistant Bill Hodges, who had persuaded Bird to return to college basketball, was promoted to head coach. He spent his entire professional career with the Boston Celtics, where he won three NBA championships and two NBA Finals MVP awards.
