Lana Del Rey was born on 21 June 1985. Lana Del Rey became the embodiment of a Southern California fantasy world she had imagined, complete with sad girls and bad boys, manufactured sorrow, and true luxury. On her 2012 debut album, Born to Die, she immediately established a stylized noir-pop atmosphere. After a successful remix of her song “Summertime Sadness,” she rose to not only fame but also respect; her 2014 album Ultraviolence was well received by critics and fans alike, and soon her many imitators were seen as nothing more than a cute sideshow.
Albums like 2019’s Grammy-nominated Norman Fucking Rockwell!, 2021’s Blue Banisters, and 2023’s Did you know that There’s a tunnel beneath Ocean Blvd showed Del Rey maturing into the persona she’d always imagined herself to be: a broken torch singer envisioned as the tragic love symbol for her generation.
Lana Del Rey’s rise to fame was a slow but steady one. Elizabeth Woolridge Grant was born to rich New York City parents, but she spent her childhood in Lake Placid and didn’t begin her musical pursuits until she was an adult and living with her aunt and uncle on Long Island. Her uncle was a guitarist, so he taught her how to play, and before long she was performing in New York clubs, sometimes as Lizzy Grant. She continued to perform music seriously about 2005 while she was a student at Fordham University. In April of that year, she finished recording an unreleased folk album called Sirens under the name May Jailer and registered it with the U.S. Copyright Office using her birth name.
She changed back to her birth name, Lizzy Grant, and began working with producer David Kahne of 5 Points Records on an EP titled Kill Kill in 2006. Kill was released digitally in 2008, and then two years later, in 2010, Grant reinvented herself as Lana Del Rey with a full-length self-titled album. After the album came out, she moved to England with her managers Ben Mawson and Ed Millett to start developing her Lana Del Rey persona after she had finally broken free from 5 Points and regained ownership of her recordings.
Due in large part to the success of the single “Ride,” which was released in November of that year, Del Rey’s EP Paradise reached number 10 on the U.S. charts. At eight tracks and 33 minutes in length, Paradise was practically a mini-LP; some pressings packaged Paradise with Born to Die.
There were a few singles and videos released by her in 2013 and her biggest release of the year was the brand new song “Young and Beautiful,” written for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. When Cedric Gervais remixed Born to Die’s “Summertime Sadness,” it became her first Top Ten hit in the United States, and the track was eventually overshadowed by that. Del Rey published a short film and an EP both titled Tropico at the tail end of 2013. Del Rey remained in the public eye when she recorded her follow-up album thanks to a string of singles and a cover of “Once Upon a Dream” from the Disney picture Maleficent.
Ultraviolence, Del Rey’s sophomore album, was released in June of 2014 and was largely produced by Dan Auerbach, leader of Ohio blues-rockers the Black Keys. The album was preceded by the singles “West Coast,” “Shades of Cool,” “Ultraviolence,” and “Brooklyn Baby.” Not only reviewed more favorably than Born to Die’s, but sales also skyrocketed, with the album opening at number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In the end, Ultraviolence didn’t provide as many chart-topping singles as Born to Die did, but it did help boost Del Rey’s critical standing, as seen by her pick to play the title song for Tim Burton’s 2014 Oscar contender, Big Eyes.
Del Rey immediately released another album after Ultraviolence. She began recording her third studio album in early 2015 and went on tour with Courtney Love that same summer. With lead singles “High by the Beach” and “Terrence Loves You,” the album Honeymoon was released in September of that year. It was number one on a few international charts and reached number two on the Billboard 200. She began recording her follow-up while on the road in promotion of Honeymoon and also provided vocals for the Weeknd’s number-one album, Starboy.
“Love,” the lead song from her fourth studio album Lust for Life, was released in early 2017. Del Rey’s second Grammy nomination, for Best Pop Vocal Album, came as a result of the album’s number-one Billboard 200 debut. She started releasing singles for her upcoming fifth album Norman Fucking Rockwell! the year after, with “Mariners Apartment Complex” and “Venice Bitch.” A steady stream of new songs, some as standalone releases and some as album tracks kept coming out throughout 2019.
After building anticipation with a version of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” and a joint single consisting of the songs “Fuck It I Love You” and “The Greatest,” Norman Fucking Rockwell! was finally released in late August 2019. The album and its title tune were both nominated for Album of the Year Grammys. The next year, Del Rey published a book of poems called Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass, which also spawned a spoken word album with the same name.
