Lainey Wilson, an American country music singer-songwriter, was born on May 19, 1992. Before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, to seek a career as a country artist, Wilson began performing at a young age. She originally published her album in 2014, and under the Lone Chief label, she did so again in 2016. In 2019, Wilson published an extended play that featured the song “Things a Man Oughta Know” after securing a publishing agreement. It was released as a single by the BBR Music Group in 2020, and it finally peaked at the top of the American country songs chart.
Wilson was born and reared in the little Louisiana hamlet of Baskin, population 300. Her mother worked as a teacher, while her father was a farmer. She had an early interest in music. Buck Owens and Glen Campbell’s vintage country music was frequently played in her family’s home. “For my family and I, country music meant more than just music. The lyrics to those songs were part of us “To The Advocate, she spoke. She first became interested in country music when she was nine years old and went to see the Grand Ole Opry. She remembers thinking, “Man, I want to do that,” as she remembered staring up there.
Wilson’s father gave her a few chords to learn, and by the time she was a preteen, she was already creating songs. She published an extended play named Country Girls Rule on Myspace in 2006. Wilson worked as a Hannah Montana impersonator in high school. She frequently organized her own performances, appearing as Hannah Montana at fairs, festivals, and birthday celebrations all around Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Once, she even entertained young cancer patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In August 2011, Wilson relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, after completing high school. She initially made her home in a camper trailer next to a Nashville recording facility. Wilson’s water and electricity were paid for by the studio owner in an effort to make ends meet. Wilson revealed in 2021 that her first few years in Nashville were challenging: “It showed me that this would not be a simple task. It helped me develop tenacity.”Wilson played a variety of local events for several years while honing her songs. Wilson put out a self-titled album on the Culprit label in 2014.
Her second album, Tougher, was released in 2016 after that. The Lone Chief record company issued the album. The project attracted attention and debuted on the 2016 Billboard Top Country Albums list. In 2018, she self-released her second EP, a self-titled compilation. Wilson subsequently agreed to a publishing contract with SONY/ATV in 2018.
She also agreed to a management contract that year. Wilson and the BBR Music Group inked a major-label recording deal in 2018. Her third EP, Redneck Hollywood, was her first major-label release. “Dirty Looks,” her first song from a big label, was also released in 2019. Off the Record UK gave the EP excellent marks, praising Wilson’s lyrics and Jay Joyce’s production. The EP is raw and honest, pushing the country music genre farther than ever and bringing it back to the traditional but also recreating it for its current surroundings, the journal stated.
Country Music Television then took notice of Wilson and featured her in their “Listen Up” Class of 2019 and “2019 CMT Next Women of Country” tour. In 2019, she went on tour with Morgan Wallen as well. Several of her songs were used at this time period in the Paramount Network program Yellowstone. Wilson’s music has a strong country influence, but it also borrows from pop, southern rock, modern country, and classic country.
Mark Deming of AllMusic described Wilson’s sound as “tough but emotional contemporary country with an edge that has its origins in vintage Southern rock and classic rock, as well as a splash of modern-day pop.” Wilson’s voice is clear and powerful, with an unapologetically Southern accent. Wilson referred to her own musical genre as “bell-bottom country,” which Taste of Country described as “a mix between easy listening and harsh realities.” Dolly Parton has had a significant effect on Wilson, and her song “WWDD” is an homage to her. She also acknowledges Lee Ann Womack as having influenced her musical style and career.
The BBR label released Wilson’s following radio song, “Things a Man Oughta Know,” in August 2020. Websites including Apple Music, iHeart Radio, Spotify, and Pandora all featured the song heavily in their media coverage. By 2021, “Things a Man Oughta Know” had become her breakthrough record, peaking at number one on the Country Songs list and third on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
On her third studio album, Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’, it was featured. It had 12 songs and was her first full-length album release on the BBR label. The album, which peaked at number 40, was her second to appear on the Billboard country albums chart. Positive reviews of the CD were given. Billy Dukes of Taste of Country said, “She succeeds in introducing her complete personality via the music, beyond writing and recording songs that delight country music lovers. “The rising talent hits it out of the park with her new album,” said Entertainment Focus.
In 2021, Wilson performed as a support act for Jason Aldean on his “Back in the Saddle Tour.” In 2021, Wilson and Cole Swindell worked together on the song “Never Say Never.” Wilson’s second record to top the Billboard country chart, the collaboration was issued as the second single off Swindell’s fourth studio album Stereotype. She released a solo single in 2022 called “Heart Like a Truck” after that. At the 56th Annual Country Music Association Awards, Wilson garnered the most nominations with six, making him the fourth artist to do so as a first-time candidate.
