Bio

Kurt Russell, full name Kurt Vogel Russell, (born March 17, 1951 in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States), is an American actor who rose to prominence as a child star in the 1960s, appearing in a number of Disney films, before transitioning to a successful career as a leading man, perhaps best known for his action dramas.

Russell’s family relocated from Massachusetts to California when he was four years old. Neil (“Bing”) Russell, a former professional baseball player, pursued an acting career there, most notably in the television series Bonanza. The younger Russell was more interested in sports, particularly baseball, but he also dabbled in acting. He made his television debut on Dennis the Menace and The Dick Powell Theatre in 1962. He tried out for the film Safe at Home! (1962), hoping to meet baseball legends Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, but he wasn’t cast. Russell later appeared on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Gilligan’s Island, as well as in the TV series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters (1963–64). In addition, he made his film debut in 1963 with It Happened at the World’s Fair.

Russell’s first Walt Disney film, Follow Me, Boys!, was released in 1966, and it was followed by The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) and Superdad (1970). Throughout this time, he continued to play baseball, and he later played for several minor-league teams. However, in 1973, he tore his rotator cuff, effectively ending his baseball career. He then concentrated on acting, and unlike many child actors, he easily transitioned to adult roles. He received critical acclaim for two television films: The Deadly Tower (1975), in which he played Charles Whitman, a mass murderer responsible for the 1966 Texas Tower shooting, and Elvis (1979), a biopic about the legendary performer. John Carpenter directed the latter, and the two collaborated on several subsequent films, most notably Escape from New York (1981).

Russell starred as Snake Plissken, a war hero turned criminal who is sent to Manhattan, which has been converted into a maximum-security prison. Officials, on the other hand, have promised to release him if he can save the president of the United States, whose plane has crashed in the borough. The film became a cult classic, and Russell’s stardom was cemented. Russell reteamed with Carpenter on the sci-fi horror film The Thing (1982), and then starred alongside Meryl Streep in Mike Nichols’ acclaimed drama Silkwood (1983).

In 1984, he co-starred with Goldie Hawn in the romantic comedy Swing Shift. Despite the film’s failure, Russell and Hawn became one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples. He then appeared in a string of crime dramas, including The Mean Season (1985) and Tequila Sunrise (1988), a commercial hit about drug dealing in which he co-starred with Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer. Tango & Cash (1989), an action comedy starring Russell and Sylvester Stallone, was critically panned but a box-office success.

Russell received better reviews for Backdraft (1991), Ron Howard’s action drama about Chicago firefighters. Tombstone (1993), in which he portrayed Wyatt Earp, was also a hit. Russell reprised his role as Snake Plissken in Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. (1996) after appearing in the sci-fi Stargate (1994), but the film failed to connect with audiences.

Russell remained a sought-after actor well into the twenty-first century. In 2004, he starred in Miracle, a film about the United States men’s ice hockey team, which defeated the Soviets at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Two years later, he starred in Poseidon, a remake of the 1972 cult classic about a sinking ocean liner. He was then cast as a murderous stunt driver in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof (2007).

He worked again with Tarantino on The Hateful Eight (2015) and then in the action drama Deepwater Horizon (2016), which was based on the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. During this time, he was also cast in two instalments of the blockbuster series The Fast and the Furious: Furious 7 (2015) and The Fate of the Furious: The Fate of the Furious: The Fate of the Furious: The Fate of the Furious: The Fate of the Furious: The Fate of the Furious: The Fate (2017). Russell also appeared in the box office smash Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which featured a Marvel Comics superhero team.

He played Santa Claus in the family comedy The Christmas Chronicles (2018), alongside Hawn as Mrs. Claus; the couple also appeared in the sequel (2020). Russell made a brief cameo as a stunt coordinator in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, a dramedy set in 1969 Los Angeles, in 2019.
