Kevin Bacon was a leading man and character actor who was so prolific and well-liked that he spawned a game based on his screen ubiquity.

He played a remarkably diverse array of roles over the course of a four-decade career in films and on television, ranging from upstanding leads in “Footloose” (1983),”Tremors” (1990), and “Apollo 13” (1995) to complex, troubled, and even (Showtime, 2019- ). Born Kevin Norwood Bacon on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of six children to architect and city planner Edmund Norwood Bacon. Edmund Norwood Bacon, known as the “father of modern Philadelphia,” inspired Kevin Norwood Bacon to find his own way to acclaim.

Kevin Norwood Bacon was the youngest of six children. Acting, which he pursued from his elementary school years through his high school years and at a special five-week theater course at Bucknell University, was the field in which he discovered it at an early age and pursued it throughout his life. At the age of 17, he moved from Philadelphia to New York City to attend the Circle in the Square Theatre School in Greenwich Village.

By the time 1978 rolled around, he had already made his debut in the role of a freshman ROTC soldier in the film “Animal House.” Bacon went back to New York and worked on daytime soap operas and the occasional feature film, such as “Friday the 13th,” in the 1980s, while simultaneously developing his skills on stage. Although the John Landis comedy was a box office success, it did not propel Bacon to stardom and make him a household name.

In the end, he was able to garner critical acclaim for his work in the theater, earning an OBIE Award in 1982 for his performance in the play “Forty Deuce,” which in turn revitalized his career in the film industry. In Barry Levinson’s “Diner,” Kevin Bacon co-starred alongside fellow rising stars Mickey Rourke, Paul Reiser, and Tim Daly.

The film served as the springboard for Bacon’s ascent to stardom, which took off in earnest after he was cast in “Footloose” as a young man in a conservative Midwestern town who loves to think freely and dance. It was a huge success with younger audiences, and it led to prominent roles as similarly brazen young men in films that were not particularly noteworthy, such as “Quicksilver” (1986) and “She’s Having a Baby” (1987) by John Hughes (1987).

Bacon wisely moved away from such projects and invested his time into character-driven roles, such as an icy killer in “Criminal Law” (1988), an aspiring filmmaker in Christopher Guest’s “The Big Picture” (1989), and a handyman pitted against subterranean monsters in the cult favorite “Tremors.” These roles eventually led to a show-stopping turn as a gay hustler connected to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Oliver Stone.

It was the success of that film as well as the critical acclaim he received for his unsympathetic turns in “A Few Good Men” (1992) and “The River Wild” (1994) that reinvigorated his career and led to a prolific run as a leading man in films such as “Apollo 13” directed by Ron Howard, “Sleepers” (1996) directed by Barry Levinson, “Mystic River” directed by Clint Eastwood, and a number of Bacon was so regularly seen on screen in the 1990s and 2000s that he was the inspiration for a game called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” This game claimed to be able to connect Bacon to any actor via shared or related projects, and it was based on the actor’s prolific cinematic career.

In the new millennium, Bacon’s film roles became increasingly diverse and even risky; for example, he played a child kidnapper in the film “Trapped” (2002), a convicted pedophile in the film “The Woodsman” (2004), a comically vain hairstylist in the film “Beauty Shop” (2004), and a grieving vigilante in the film “Death Sentence” (2004). (2007). As the decade of the 2000s came to a close, Kevin Bacon began to find more substantive work on television.

He won a Golden Globe for his performance as a Marine who escorted the body of a fallen soldier back to his hometown in the HBO drama “Taking Chance” (2009), and he starred as a former FBI agent who was pursuing a serial killer with a devoted cult in “The Following” (Fox, 2013-2015). In addition, he continued to work steadily in the film industry, albeit in supporting or showcase roles for films such as “X-Men: First Class” (2011).

After the final episode of “Following” aired, Bacon went back to his busy character actor work on television and film, during which he earned critical accolades for his flinty parts in the films “Cop Car” (2015), “Black Mass” (2015), and “Patriots Day” (2016). Before taking on the part of a crooked FBI agent in the crime series “City on a Hill” for producers Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, he made a brief comedic comeback in the Amazon series “I Love Dick” (2017), in which he was the subject of Kathryn Hahn’s fascination.
