Ken Watanabe was born in the city of Uonuma in Japan on October 21st, 1959. Both of his parents had careers in teaching; his mother lectured on general education, while his father instructed students in calligraphy. When he was 24 years old, a director at England’s National Theater Company, where he was studying at the time, informed him that acting was his specific skill.
This sparked his interest in the performing arts as a career. In 1978, he uprooted his life and went to Tokyo in order to pursue acting. Even though Ken was just a student at the time, he was selected by the renowned Japanese director Yukio Ninagawa to play the main part in one of his plays. This is what brought him to the notice of the critics. In 1982, he made his debut on the small screen for the first time.
When he was cast as the main character in the drama series “Dokugan ryu Masamune,” which was shown on Japanese national television, he experienced a significant step forward in his career. It was his role as a samurai leader hero that brought him widespread recognition in Japan. Leukemia was the cause of his collapse in 1989, which occurred while he was shooting a movie in Canada.
He staged a remarkable return and appeared with Tom Cruise in the 2003 film The Last Samurai, which catapulted him to the forefront of the Hollywood scene. In addition to a son, Ken is the parent of model, actress, and singer Anne Watanabe, as well as another child. He is a die-hard supporter of the Japanese professional baseball club Hanshin Tigers as well as the Kobe Steel rugby side.
He is a huge fan of noodles. I’m not a huge star in Japan. I work as an actor. My life is quite average overall. I prepare meals at home four times a week. That is not something a star would do. I don’t see myself in any way as a representation of sex at all. However, the interpretation of a sex symbol in Japan may be rather different to that in other parts of the world.
The Japanese version seems to place a more focus on a kind of matured or mature masculine appeal than does the original version. And if that’s the case, then I think I should be glad to hear it since it confirms my suspicions.
Every filmmaker has their own unique style. Because of the vast differences between Clint Eastwood and Chris Nolan, it is necessary for me to make adjustments to the narrative, the character, the director, and even merely my responsibilities as an actor.
As an actor from Japan, one of my greatest goals is to collaborate with a large number of other actors and actresses from across the globe, as well as a large number of directors who are skilled in a wide variety of areas. I get the impression that one’s country is of no consequence at all.
About half of the screenplays that are provided to me involve characters that I simply can’t connect with, notably one-dimensional businesspeople or, if the script is for a comedy, some silly 10-year-old Japanese caricature, some function relating to information technology or business.
There is no use in getting worked up about it since that is the reality of the situation. My acting career took a kind of pivotal turn with the films Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) and Memories of Tomorrow (2006), both of which I was in. After devoting so much of myself to the films, I was at a loss for what to do next since I had invested so much of myself in them.
Ken’s appreciation for music was something that he acquired throughout his time spent in school. He taught himself how to play the trumpet and eventually went on to create a school music band with his friends. After receiving his diploma, he had aspirations of enrolling in a conservatory but was forced to abandon those ambitions owing to a lack of financial resources. After a great deal of toil and effort, he was ultimately successful in enrolling in an acting program in Tokyo.
Throughout his time in training, Ken received a great deal of praise and admiration. Because of his formidable acting skills, he was given the opportunity to star in the title role in his second theatrical play, which was titled “Shitaya mannencho monogatari.” Even before he had finished his acting class, this took place.
The reviewers were very enthusiastic with Ken’s first television series, which was called Michinaru Hanran. Ken had an overwhelming number of invitations to star in television shows as a result of his depiction of a samurai, which garnered the attention of other filmmakers. Ken had an appearance in the movie “MacArthur’s Children” in 1984, which was nominated for a 57th Academy Award.
He continued on portraying a samurai in various Japanese films and television shows such as ‘Dokuganryu Masamune’, ‘Jidaigeki Gokenin Zankuro’, ‘Oda Nobunaga’, ‘Chushingura’ and ‘Bakumatsu Junjo Den’. Ken quickly became a well-known figure in Japan after all of these films went on to achieve commercial success. In 1998, Ken made a stunning return with the film “Kizuna,” for which he was even nominated for an Academy Award in Japan.
In 2003, Ken appeared with Tom Cruise in the film “The Last Samurai,” which catapulted him to the forefront of Hollywood’s spotlight. Ken’s autobiography, titled “Dare? – Who Am I?,” was published in 2006, and it is in this book that he discusses the treatments he had for Hepatitis C.
Ken has provided his voice for a number of animated films and video games, some examples of which are “Batman Begins,” “Transformers,” and “Samurai Shodown 64.” In addition to that, he has provided his voice for the forthcoming movie “The Lion King.”
