Ken Stott Bio

Ken Campbell, Ken Stott, often known by his stage as “Ken,” is a Scottish actor most remembered for performing in the drama “Broken Glass.” Throughout his career, which spans more than four decades, he has maintained an equal level of activity across all forms of performing arts. Stott was born in Edinburgh to parents who both worked in the field of education. Early in his youth, he discovered that he was interested in acting, and he went on to study at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. He got his start in the theater industry on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

However, to put food on the table and support himself during the early stages of his profession, he was forced to take a job as a salesperson for double-glazed windows. In 1977, he appeared on TV in an episode of the British television program “Secret Army.” About a decade later, in the crime-drama thriller film ‘For Queen & Country’ from 1988, he made his debut in the film industry.

In the years that followed, he played the roles of Edward “Eddie” McKenna in the BBC miniseries “Takin’ Over the Asylum,” Detective Inspector John Rebus in the criminal fiction-mystery series “Rebus,” DCI Red Metcalfe in “Messiah,” the dwarf Balin in “The Hobbit” film trilogy, and Ian Garrett in the BBC miniseries “The Missing.”

When Ken Stott began his acting career, all his performances were staged. His portrayal of the protagonist in the dramatization of Dominic Behan’s play on the unrest in Northern Ireland, ‘The Folk Singer,’ which took place at the Belfast Lyric Theatre, is one of the most remarkable performances he gave at that time. Stott debuted on the small screen for the first time in 1977. He played the part of Baroja in an episode of the British television drama ‘Secret Army’ that year. He played in the television movie “The Beggar’s Opera,” which aired in 1983.

When he debuted in the film industry in 1988 with “For Queen and Country,” he collaborated with well-known actors such as Denzel Washington, Dorian Healy, and Sean Chapman.
In 1994, he had a starring role in the Scottish BBC drama “Takin’ Over the Asylum,” which he played alongside a younger version of David Tennant. His character, Edward “Eddie” McKenna, is an alcoholic double-glazing salesperson with aspirations of becoming a disc jockey. During his employment at a hospital, he encounters a wide range of patients suffering from various mental diseases.

Between 2006 and 2007, Stott portrayed Detective Inspector John Rebus on the British television drama series ‘Rebus’ on ITV. In the program’s first season (2000), John Hannah played the role of the character when it was initially introduced. In the first four seasons of the crime-drama television program ‘Messiah’ aired on BBC One between 2001 and 2005, he played the role of Detective Chief Inspector Red Metcalfe. It is centered on the main character, played by Stott, who often looks into terrible killings.

His on-screen wife, Susan Metcalfe, was portrayed by Michelle Forbes, who has a hearing impairment. So that their characters could speak with one another, both Stott and Forbes became fluent in British Sign Language. In the historical action picture ‘King Arthur’ from 2004, he had a supporting role as Marius Honorius, an enemy of Arthur’s. After that, the following year, he appeared in the historical romance picture “Casanova” with Heath Ledger and Sienna Miller. In the same year, he also appeared in the “Uncle Adolf” telefilm as Adolf Hitler.

Stott was nominated for his first British Academy Scotland Award for his performance as the late comic Tony Hancock in BBC Four’s “Hancock and Joan.” The character of Joan Le Mesurier, played by Maxine Peake, earned Stott the award for Best Actor in Television. The two main protagonists, who were married to other people at the time of the events in the novel, had an affair with one another.

Stott performed the dwarf Balin in the three movies that comprised The Hobbit trilogy. In 2017, he was one of the principal cast members in the second season of the horror psychological thriller program ‘Fortitude,’ which was shown on Sky Atlantic. In 2018, he appeared in the biographical drama film “The Mercy.”

In the theatrical performance of “Broken Glass,” Ken Stott was an essential cast member. In the play by Arthur Miller in 1994, the main characters are a married couple residing in New York City in 1938 at the same time as Kristallnacht is occurring in Nazi Germany. In the 1994 staging of the play at the National Theatre Lyttelton, Stott was cast as Dr. Harry Hyman. As a result of his work, he was honored with the Laurence Olivier Award in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category in 1995.

In 2015, he was recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television in Scotland (BAFTA Scotland) for his performance as Ian Garrett in the BBC miniseries “The Missing” (2014). Additionally, the portrayal earned him a nomination for a BAFTA TV Award in the year 2015.
Although Stott is a devoted fan of the Scottish football club Heart of Midlothian, the main character he played in the show ‘Rebus’ is, unfortunately, a fan of Hibernian, which is Midlothian’s fiercest rival.
