Keith David was born on June 4, 1956. He had aspirations of being an actor ever since he played the role of the Cowardly Lion in school productions. After completing his education at Manhattan’s School of Performing Arts, he went on to acquire a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Drama Division of the Juilliard School between the years 1975 and 1979.
Keith David, who is of African-American descent, is an actor who has worked in film, television, and voice-over. He was born and raised in New York, and it was there that he came to the conclusion that he wanted to pursue a career in acting when he was only 13 years old. Other films that he has been in include Men at Work, Barbershop, Crash, and The Chronicles of Riddick. In spite of the fact that he was not offered a large number of significant roles, he always managed to leave an indelible impression with his superb performance. He was able to establish a successful career in the field of voice acting thanks to the exceptional strength of his voice.
He was the narrator for a number of Ken Burns films, the most notable of which was “The War,” and he earned many Emmy Awards for his work. To name just a few of the many characters he has voiced, he played Goliath on Disney’s “Gargoyles,” Spawn/Al Simmons in Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn,” Dr. Facilier in “The Princess and the Frog,” and voiced countless more in video games, cartoons, and commercials. His work in the Broadway production of “Jelly’s Last Jam” got him a nomination for a Tony Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor in a Musical.
After joining John Houseman’s “The Acting Company” in 1980, Keith David began his acting career with John Houseman’s productions of plays such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Waiting for Godot.” These productions took place in the same year. Houseman was reared in the United Kingdom despite having been born in Romania. He originally came to the notice of a large number of people after acting in the cult classic science fiction horror film The Thing, which was directed by John Carpenter. In the film, he performed the role of Childs, which was also played by Kurt Russell.
In the 1980s, he appeared on the children’s television show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” as Keith the Southwood Carpenter in the episode “Neighborhood of Make-Believe” and as Keith the game coin collector in the episode “Donkey Kong.” Both of these episodes were about make-believe neighborhoods. Emilio Estevez directed the 1990 comedy film ‘Men at Work,’ in which he starred alongside Charlie Sheen and Leslie Hope as a Vietnam War veteran named Louis Fedders.
His work between the years 1986 and 1990 is consisting of supporting appearances in films such as the military drama Platoon directed by Oliver Stone, the action comedy Marked for Death directed by Steven Seagal, and the comedy Stars and Bars. During the 1990s, he lent his voice to a pair of critically acclaimed animated television series. In the animated series Gargoyles, he provided the voice of Goliath, and in the movie Spawn, he played the main character.
When 1995 arrived, he had already established himself as the primary draw in not one but two films about criminals. His performances as the small-time crook Kirby in ‘Dead Presidents’ and the enormous ‘André the enormous’ in ‘Clockers’ were praised by both film critics and audiences alike. He portrayed the role of Police Lieutenant Ed Fox in the film “Volcano,” which was released in 1997. This picture, which starred Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche, was met with mixed reviews from film critics. In “Princess Mononoke,” the actor lent his voice to Okkoto-sushi, a boar god, and he also took part in “33 Eyes,” a Japanese production that was made in 1997.
In 1998, he had roles in movies that covered a wide variety of genres. In the science fiction thriller “Armageddon,” he played General Kimsey, while in the comedy “There’s Something About Mary,” he played Mary’s dad, Charlie. Both roles were very different. David portrayed the part of Abu “Imam” al-Walid, a Muslim leader, in the science fiction thriller “The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black,” which was released in the year 2000 and starred Van Diesel. Since 2003, they have been collaborating together. Ice Cube is a rapper. His work may be heard on the album “Terrorist Threats” which was released by Ice’s band Westside Connection, as well as on the albums “Raw Footage” and “I Am the West” that Ice released under his own name.
The documentary “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson,” which Ken Burns directed and narrated, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. It was Jack Johnson who made history by becoming the first black boxer to win the Heavyweight Championship. In addition to his dramatic parts in “The Chronicles of Riddick,” “Crash,” and “Chain Letter,” he made appearances in comedies such as “Barbershop,” “Agent Cody Banks,” “Delta Farce,” “First Sunday,” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” between the years 2002 and 2010.
Since 2004, he has provided the narration for a number of different documentaries, some of which include “World War II: Behind Closed Doors” on the BBC, “Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land” on PBS, and “Crusades: Crescent & the Cross” on the History Channel. He provided the narration for the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick miniseries “The War” in the year 2007. There were a total of seven episodes in it. The documentary offered an account of the war from an American point of view. During that year, he worked on two different animated films as a contributor. In the film “Coraline,” he provided the voice of The Cat, and in “The Princess and the Frog,” he provided the voice of Doctor Facilier, an evil voodoo witch doctor.
He has contributed his voice for two different video games, the first of which is “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” in which he plays the part of Sergeant Foley, and the second which is “Saints Row IV,” a comedy-action video game that was released in 2013, in which he voices both himself and the character Julius Little.
